Virtual communities with more than 100 million active users

Hi,

I believe one column should be deleted from this page. The 'Registered Users' column. Almost all companies there never posted their total registered users number bar one from what I checked. So the registered users number corresponds to the number of monthly active users in most cases. Therefore it is false data No companies post this number as it is not useful. Hello, Alakagom. The place to discuss this is on that article's Talk Page. Often when somebody suggests an improvement to an article "you can edit it yourself!" is good advice; but if you're planning to make a change that affects the whole article, it would be prudent to suggest it on the talk page first. Protocol for uploading photos

Hello, Kajinka!. I wouldn't call it a protocol, but there are several steps. The first is to determine the copyright status of the pictures. If they are pictures of a living person they are probably not old enough to be in the public domain; so we would require that the copyright owner (who is usually the photographer, unless there was a contract which specifically said otherwise) expicitly release them under a licence such as CC-BY-SA, which will allow anybody to reuse them for any purpose, commercial or not. If the copyright holder can be identified, and is willing to do this, then it is easiest if they upload the pictures themselves to Wikimedia Commons, declaring that they release them under this licence. If they are not able to do this, then they can send an email as explained at donating copyright materials. But if the copyright holder is not willing to license the pictures in this way (permission to use them on Wikipedia is not sufficient), or if the copyright holder cannot be found, then I'm afraid they cannot be used. See Help:Upload.
Once the pictures have been uploaded successfully to Commons, it is straightforward to insert them into articles. --ColinFine (talk) 20:03, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

how to publish

The draft article is unsourced, and the subject may have challenges meeting Wikipedia's notability standards, from what I can find about him. You might also want to read Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Common outcomes#Candidates. Unless he's elected, it would also be a case of WP:TOOSOON. timtempleton, the draft says that this person has been an elected Senator in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 2006. Accordingly, he meets the notability guideline for politicians if this can be verified. Obviously, the draft article needs to be referenced before it can be accepted. Inappropriate use of images on User pages

On the Wikimedia Commons, there are *a lot* of nude images and stuff like that. Are we allowed to put those on our user pages? I don't want to because that's rather gross, but I'm just curious as to whether or not there are community guidelines that would ban me if I tried that. Redditaddict69 11:45, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

For what it's worth, I have come across some user pages of experienced editors which include as an image or background some nude photograph. It has only happened a few times, though. The picture has always been some nude photography art, though, rather unsurprisingly of a woman. I doubt this is prohibited and considered actionably disruptive, but it might be discouraged and an occasional user who does not understand Wikipedia's position on censorship might complain on the user talk page. It is definitely gray area content. Is it possible to "revert" a clearly vandalistic page move, without all the voting procedures?

So, an editor renamed this article Cengizhan Erdoğan about a Tuvan sportsperson to a new name. Obviously he didn't cite any sources so I am presuming it was an attempt at trolling. I can't move the page back to its original name because the original name is now a redirect. Is it possible to move that page back without spending time on starting a vote and then waiting for people to stumble across that vote because that page is clearly not watched by a lot of people? @Openlydialectic: I suggest you ask Mohsen1248 why they moved the page before you attempt to revert it. It's not a good idea to assume that an edit was "vandalistic" or "trolling" just because the reason for it is not immediately apparent to you. a clearly vandalistic page move !! well done. if you know nothing about something better to just leave it. sometimes I'm busy with multiple edits and forget to add refs. this guy Open Sat is not a naturliazed Turkish citizen under a new name Cengizhan Erdoğan, while they didn't mention it in his database porfile you still can see his achievement when he was representing Russia. If it had been a vandalistic move it could have been moved back despite the presence of the redirect (see WP:MOR), but it obviously wasn't vandalistic, see ref 2 in the article. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:55, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

Newb Need opinions about editing

Hi, I've never edited. I was reading an article & found statements which caught my attention because it appears to be an opinion rather than fact. The article is "Colin Kaepernick" Here is the above mentioned part:

His actions prompted negative and positive responses. The negative responses included suggestions that players who protest should be fired;[4] other people displayed their disapproval of players' protests by leaving the stadium immediately after the protests or refusing to watch games at all.[5][6] Positive responses included similar activity by additional athletes in the NFL and other American sports leagues protesting in various ways during the anthem.

I feel that each person may differ on if it was a positive, or negative response so here is I hope a better way:

Difference between "(U.S. politician)" and "(American politician)"?

If you search the following two things, you get hundreds of results:

  • intitle:"(U.S. politician)"
  • intitle:"(American politician)"

So what's the difference? Why are there different titles for U.S. vs. American?

And some of them have redirects to the opposite version. Example:

I guess Wikipedia just has inconsistent titling for this sort of "parenthetical disambiguation". Continual promotion on article

Dear editors, I will love to call the attention of the volunteer community to the edits of user:Dell Corei3 towards the article Monsurat Sunmonu. He has been violating NPOV, using weasel and promotional word against Wikipedia's voice and guidelines. The previous edits made by me for the article to meet Wikipedia's standards were wiped off and the previous violating content was pasted. Hi, @Haylad:, the account seems to have ceased editing. After their few random edits they've not edited since August 14, so it is likely they're gone. TV Series no. of seasons/episodes

For articles on TV series should the number of seasons/episodes shown in the info box on the right include yet to be aired seasons/episodes? I would think not and have occasionally been caught out by this when it shows there is a season I haven't seen and then see it says it will air "TBC 2019" or something similar. Would I be right to edit this to what has already been released or is it correct to have the future (but confirmed) shown here as well?

I'm sure there must be a guideline which explains this somewhere, and I did try and search the site as well as doing one through Google but came up empty handed. Unfortunately, I'm not an expert on television infoboxes (another Teahouse host might know more!), but I can point you to the documentation pages for the infoboxes. The infobox you'll find on main television series articles is {{infobox television}}, and if you go to Template:Infobox television, you'll find the documentation for the template in the green box. Incidentally, the documentation says that the |num_seasons= parameter should only be incremented once the first episode of that season or series has aired, or if a reliable source confirms production has commenced. An inline citation is required if the total number of seasons produced is greater than the number aired. Similarly, the |num_episodes= should only be incremented when new episodes air. Name for an article

The name of this tennis tournament is "Lagos Open", and it is not related to Lagos Open. Since the latter has been discontinued, will it be out of place if the one in my sandbox takes the name, while the other one is disambiguated to something else? If it is not possible, what alternative name can be given to the most significant tennis tournament in Nigeria (sandbox)?HandsomeBoy (talk) 02:04, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

Submission Declined

Hello,

My submission for my article BARJONA was declined and the message that was sent to me was, "Hard to know what this is but a suitable draft it isn't". This is the only feedback that I received. There were no further explanations or any helpful information at all. @Muziqmeistro: Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. The draft you created seems to me to just state the existence of a church and some biblical passages associated with it. I assume it to be more than that, but that's the only way I can describe it. Unfortunately, that is not valid article content. Wikipedia articles must do more than merely tell about a subject. Their content must be supported with independent reliable sources that show how the subject is notable as Wikipedia defines it. If you do not have at least three such sources, the subject is not yet notable and trying to write an article at this point will only fail.
4) Summarize those sources from step 2, adding citations at the end of them. You'll want to do this in a program with little/no formatting, like Microsoft Notepad or Notepad++, and not in something like Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer.
5) Combine overlapping summaries (without arriving at new statements that no individual source supports) where possible, repeating citations as needed.
6) Paraphrase the whole thing just to be extra sure you've avoided any copyright violations or plagiarism.

Reliable source

My submission was declined as I did not cite a reliable source such as an in-depth written article by a newspaper etc , does this mean if I cannot obtain this I should withdraw my submission?

@Shane Royle: If there are no such sources, then the topic is not notable. Doing a quick search on Google News and Google Books, I didn't see any sources either. Otherwise, I'd link a few for you to base the article on.
You can request that the page be deleted by putting {{Db-g7}} at the top of the draft (assuming you're the only person who has put any real work into it).
My usual advice for when you're going to write an article on any topic:
1) Choose a topic whose notability is attested by discussions of it in several reliable independent sources.
2) Gather as many professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources you can find.
3) Focus on just the ones that are not dependent upon or affiliated with the subject, but still specifically about the subject and providing in-depth coverage (not passing mentions). Your draft Draft:Tocher and Tocher Taxidermists was declined because many of the proposed references mention Tocher and Tocher very briefly, and much of the content had no references. You deleted some content and resubmitted. In my opinion, the article will be declined again. This topic may be too obscure to be an article. A reliable source would be something like a reputable newspaper/magazine (or the website of such a reputable news organization), a published book, or an academic journal.   • @Lightcaller: The topic is discussed at LessWrong#Roko's_basilisk, although a stand-alone article might be possible if you can demonstrate noteworthy discussion of the concept outside of LessWrong. If you're going to write an article about anyone or anything, here are the steps you should follow:

It is also apparently discussed in this book, although the preview won't load that part for me. I was trained and guided by Mz7 who is an extremely kind and knowledgeable instructor on counter vandalism subject. Add a new german Label record

I want to add the german Label records Hafenbeat.com and Audioactive records of Hamburg into the list of the german independant Labels . Is it possible ? What's the procedure for improper speedy AfD closes due to nominator withdraw

I admit I probably should have been watching the AFD more closely, but Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Irfan Adelbi was closed speedily despite another editor supporting the deletion. On further review, I've found it unlikely that it would meet WP:GNG, and the keep !voters do not consider the FAQ of WP:ATH, where it explicitly says [t]he topic-specific notability guidelines described on this page do not replace the general notability guideline. I'm a little lost as to what to do now though. Do I list this at DRV? Can I just contact the nominator? Is the nominator allowed to relist the AfD? Also, I feel kinda weird asking at the Teahouse. Is there a AfD specific question board? (Though I don't imagine one would get that much traffic, so I guess I've answered my own question on that last one.) Help

I don't understand how am I to verify information if the information I have is all I can receive and it is reliable source. Do you actually have to be with that person, home, etc...for Wikipidea to believe your story. I am writing for Draft; Hector LaTorre/Bermudez and want those who are lost in life to see how well you can make a change to society for the greatness.

If you want to verify information, you need to cite some professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources that are about the subject.

Question regarding handling of past behavior

Now I know this question may be a waste of time to ask and answer, but it’s something I really want closure on, and I don’t know where else to ask it, so here we go. A few days ago, I left this message on Beeblebrox’s talk page, titled “A confession I must make”. and while he deleted it after reading it, it went like this:

I'll be happy to be proven otherwise. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 01:50, 15 June 2012 (UTC)" In the Summer of 2012, after incompetently fighting my block for a year and a half, I was talk page blocked for a year until I became mature. When that year came, I felt that I had matured and met WP:CIR and I was about to demonstrate, when you decided that everything above was enough of a reason to revoke talk page access without letting me have my chance I was promised a year ago. While I am not upset now, as I don't hold grudges, I was mad at the time and decided to block evade, even though that didn't help my case. Eventually, in April 2014, I decided to start fresh with my current account. I had been living under this shadow for 4 and a half years, and I felt it was finally time to come clean. I am sorry for my incompetency when I was a little boy, and I am almost an adult now. I've spent 4 years evading under a new alias and I've shown that I am a good Wikipedian that way. I had to play dirty to do it, but I proved it. I'm sorry I resorted to those tactics, but I just felt it was unfair that I wasn't given that opportunity I was promised a year ago. I am not mad at you over it, that's in the past, but I at the time felt it was unfair for me. I'm admitting this because I wanted to come clean to you about it, and so that it's not hanging on me any longer. I wanted to be the bigger man and hold on to my honor and be honest. Will I be amnestied for my wrongdoings of the past and we move on, or will I be idef'd for breaking the blocking policy big time long ago? Sorry, Robertoc3334, but Wikipedia policy prohibits the creation of pages for exposure. Unless you've already been in the news, there's no way to write an article about you sourced to reliable sources. Have you considered starting a blog or writing an autobiography? Hi Robertoc3334. The short answer is that Wikipedia is not a website like Facebook or LinkedIn, etc. where you create an account to tell others all about yourself. Wikipedia articles are really only written about subject deemed to be Wikpedia notable and Wikipedia article content is only intended to really relfect what reliable sources (preferably secondary and independent) say about a subject, not what a subject says about itself. So, take a look a Wikipedia:The answer to life, the universe, and everything, Wikipedia:Notability (people), and Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing for some more information. If you're someone who is considered to be Wikipedia notable enough to have an article written about him, then perhaps someday someone will do just that. To add content to an article in which you have a WP:COI, you just need to post a request on the article's corresponding Talk page detailing what you'd like added using the instructions described here: Wikipedia:Simple conflict of interest edit request. To add a new parameter to the Church infobox, you need to start a discussion at Template_talk:Infobox_church, detailing your proposal. Chetsford (talk) 22:01, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
If I am understanding Frankdoherty correctly, I think they may mean adding and filling another parameter in the infobox at their church's article, presumably this one given their edits. If so, then since this thread already exists, they can simply state what needs to be done here and I or another user can do it. I think you need to go back to the talk page of the article, at Talk:Performance fabrics and work out with other editors what sort of references should be added to the article. As best I can tell, you are inserting references that, at best, relate only tangentially to the statements that you are intending to support. If you want to improve the definition, and are finding some resistance, the talk page is also the place to put forward your suggested improvement and justify it. RAJIVVASUDEV: the problem with your explanations of the term performance fabric is not that they're "technical and not understandable easily". It's that they're vacuous, they don't say anything.

@RAJIVVASUDEV: I was looking to find an article named Engineered fabrics for contrast but such a page does not yet exist. A Google search indicates that this term is frequently used for fabrics that have been treated with chemical coatings to alter their characteristics. It appears that you are already discussing this at Talk:Performance fabrics#Performance fabrics with Roxy the dog. Article talk pages are usually the best places for such discussions because it makes it easier for other editors who might be interested in the subject matter to participate in the discussion. However, you need to be patient because editors occasionally get busy and might not immediately respond to your posts. Hey folks, I'm a new editor here and I'm still learning / digging around. Thanks in advance for your help and patience.

I work with an music artist at my record label and we're trying to find his page. It disappeared around the beginning of 2017, apparently over a battle of sources. I searched the deleted log and couldn't find it. Are there other ways I can find it, or find the topic and re-open the conversation?

But, LukeWhiteplays, before you go any further with this, please read WP:COI. It wasn't "his page", and if it ever gets created again it won't be "his page". It should be an article about him, based almost entirely on what people who have no connection with him have chosen to publish about him; and he and his associates are discouraged from editing it directly. I've read through the articles you suggested and found them quite helpful. However, I could use some additional clarification. Can you confirm that a page will be deleted, regardless of the relevance and non-bias nature of most of it, if some of it appears to be biased? Also, how do you make that distinction? Is it voted on by a team of your peers? Or is it considered blatant promotion because 1) it's being edited by "associates" and therefore cannot in any way be un-biased, and 2) because certain statements lack references? Thanks for your patience and time! Again, I'm new here and still learning.
Hello again, Lukewhiteplays. Any article about a musical performer must establish clearly that the performer meets our notabilty guideline for musical performers. This must be completely convincing to editors who review the article. The majority of musical performers do not qualify. Any administrator can delete an article if no credible claim of notabilty is made. If there is genuine doubt about notabilty, then the matter can be discussed for a week or more at Articles for Deletion. People directly associated with the performer financially must complete a mandatory paid editing disclosure. This is not negotiable and should be your very next edit. Paid editors must use the Articles for creation process to write a draft for review by uninvolved editors. As for adding unreferenced content, that is never a good idea, and paid editors are held to a very stringent standard. Please read and study Your first article, and follow every step described there. The bias issue is about need to write in a neutral point of view. See WP:NPOV. You also have a conflict of interest that requires you comply with WP:PAID. If you do not, you risk being blocked. From WP:PAID "Editors who are or expect to be compensated for their contributions must disclose their employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any paid contributions. They must do this on their main user page, or on the talk page accompanying any paid contributions, or in edit summaries...The conflict of interest guideline further advises editors to place the {{connected contributor (paid)}} template at the top of the talk page accompanying any paid contributions (and to fill in the parameters), and to supply a clearly visible list of their paid contributions on their main user page.
