Template:Campaignbox Operations in Southwest Louisiana (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)

Nearly all of our 100+ American Civil War campaignbox templates are based on CWSAC's directory of American Civil War campaigns. 'Operations in Southwest Louisiana' does not appear on that list, so it is not part of an established scheme. In addition, according to this source, the Battle of Calcasieu Pass was "the only Civil War action in S. W. Louisiana"; therefore, it is unlikely that this campaignbox will ever be expanded or serve as a naviagational aid. -- Black Falcon (talk) 05:04, 3 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Sheikh (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
Template:SaQ (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)

unnecessary link obfuscation. Frietjes (talk) 16:14, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • It would have been nice to be informed that this editor had a problem with my templates before their un-explained reverts of their use. I created them because of the systematic need to show a different name in an article than the link. In this case, the articles for the rulers of the al-Qasimi clan have the form "Son bin Father Al Qasimi" and they are to be displayed in prose as "Sheikh Son bin Father Al Qasimi". So, instead of having to repeatedly type double-size links like:
[[Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi|Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi]]
taking care to spell/capitalize/hyphenate each word correctly, I created a template to allow providing only the changeable part of the name instead:
{{SaQ|Sultan bin Saqr}}
and documented it.
In what way is that obfuscating anything? The Son bin Father part is that which people think about while editing and reading anyway – the additional name decoration is just clutter from an editor's perspective (with all due respect, of course). This is exactly the type of thing templates (and wikiML) are meant for – to improve consistency, accuracy, and maintainability of articles.
Now, there is the problem that the articles about this clan are not entirely consistent (which I'm hoping to talk about and get fixed), necessitating the need for a third parameter to change the dynastic suffix to al-Qasimi (instead of Al Qasimi) instead. It's still easier to set such a parameter once than type it twice, and easier to read and edit the resulting wiki code. Hopefully, if the transliterations can be unified, the additional parameter will no longer be necessary, further simplifying things.
{{Sheikh}} can be used all over the place, any time you need to prefix someone's name with it, instead of having to type:
[[Son bin Father bin Grandfather al-Dynasty|Sheikh Son bin Father bin Grandfather al-Dynasty]]
you can type:
{{Sheikh|Son bin Father bin Grandfather al-Dynasty}}.
Isn't that easier? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 11:41, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • The correct answer here is to just create redirects at the "Sheikh" articles and link directly. Redirects are cheap. We don't need trivial text-substitution templates for it. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 10:47, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • It's not only (or even primarily) about the Sheikh prefix, though that, in itself, is a lot of work for something that is so systematic and common. Both templates are about making these articles easier to maintain and thereby improving accuracy and consistency. They reduce clutter from wikimarkup and reduce the number of times one has to type the same names. As people add names for a dynasty, they don't have to try to figure out which spelling and hyphenation to use – the default in the template can be decided upon in one place. They were a direct result of my trying to edit some articles, having to type the same patterns repeatedly, and wondering (as any good programmer does) how to make that easier and more accurate. AFAIK, that's what templates are for, nobody has explained what's actually wrong with it, and only 2 other people have even commented on it in 17 days. Doesn't sound to me like a reason to delete what helps even one user, much less others that don't yet know about it. I'm sure I can find other examples of actually trivial and unnecessary templates that might benefit more from the attention of the pruning corps. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 22:01, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Navigates between very few articles. Note that the first two extended plays have been redirected to the artist's main article as they do not appear notable (the third, Home, is questionable; a search reveals at least a couple decent sources so that article might be warranted, but I digress).
