  • Keep. It's used as a field on a number of US sports roster templates (example) and easily links 100s of colleges, making updating easier and reducing errors. The purpose is to connect the full name of the school (and presumably the name of the WP article for the school) to the athletic WP:COMMONNAME, which is typically what sport fans associate. I guess it is local usage, but for an English-speaking nation of 300 million people, not exactly some county. Honestly, I don't really see what benefit is derived from deleting the template.     Comment - I would add that there is value in this template ensuring a level of consistency to the college field in these sport rosters. This way, the college names always appear consistently and always link consistently. If left to manual links, you could have either the “University of Southern California,” “Southern California” or “USC” and that link could point to “University if Southern California,” “USC Trojans” or “USC Trojans men's basketball.” It would be all over the map given how prevelant usage is of this field in basketball rosters. Among others, it proposes assigning UM to University of Manila, despite UM being used by over 20 other universities. Is first-come-first-served really a satisfactory way to do this?     Cabayi, "UM" can be easily resolved this way: Squad templates use this template almost exclusively, to denote which college a player went in to. College athletics is primarily practiced with major coverage only in 2 countries, the United States, and the Philippines. So, in the United States, I dunno if any of those colleges are predominantly referred to as "UM" in WP:RS: I do know for a fact that the University of Michigan, University of Missouri and the University of Memphis are called "Michigan", "Missouri" and "Memphis", as per Michigan Wolverines, Missouri Tigers and Memphis Tigers. Assuming other U.S. universities are named this way, this leaves us with the University of Manila. Now, this is a rather small school and does not have a sports-specific article, but the sports teams from the University of Manila is almost certainly not referred to as the "Manila Hawks", but as the "UM Hawks" (and surely the "University of Manila Hawks") as per these couple of references. Now, if an athlete from another university that is called "UM" plays in the Philippines together with someone who played for the UM Hawks, that would be a problem, but the odds of someone from the University of Mauritius (assuming it's called as "UM") and from the UM Hawks playing at the same team at the same time is infinitesimally low.     Howard the Duck I think you misunderstand the implications. It's not about one UM meeting another UM in competition, it's about Manila being returned for every use of UM. Consider AU which is already implemented {{College|AU}} -> Arellano.     So if there isn't a solution to resolve this, deletion is the answer. Is that right? That's not exactly a valid reason for deletion. Can't we find a solution, instead? (In either case, Arellano University isn't always referred to as "AU": see Arellano Chiefs. "AU" is only used if you're short in space. I would encourage removal of "AU" for usage for that school.)     ETA: I would have to make sure those 28+ other colleges are indeed referred to as "AU" (In the University of Mauritius example I gave above, it turns out to be referred to as "UoM", which means the template will not be screwed up at least between UM and UoM because UM would refer to the school from the Philippines, and if other schools have some sort of athletic program that means it would be used in this template.     I don’t think this discussion is the place for this. Suffice to say, we can work ou the naming conventions after this is settled, if appropriate. I don’t think “UM” works for anyone, it’s too ambiguous.   • Keep. If I'm not mistaken, Template:College is used within hundreds of templates about basketball rosters. (eg: Template:Toronto Raptors roster or Template:NorthPort Batang Pier roster and the many roster templates for different years for teams around the world.)   • Keep because of integrated and large use, the effort to depreciate and delete this template is too great. Variable input is something that needs to be counted for. It doesn’t make sense to me that it’s better to have people freestyling how college names appear and how they are directed instead of using something that standardizes this across hundreds of templates. Perhaps I am missing something? Also, no one has linked the previous consensus discussions for similar templates, which would be helpful to the discussion. See discussion here - It is no longer used by the article wizard, per Category:Unreviewed new articles the vast majority of article space transclusions are on actually reviewed pages, and it only appears to be added by some people who do it when creating articles.   • Delete It is no longer used by anything (only added manually by users that know that the template exists), and pretty much all of the examples of the template (Category:Unreviewed_new_articles) are on pages that were marked as reviewed but where the template didn't get removed. Special:NewPagesFeed tracks new pages now, and there isn't any reason to have the template there on some articles and not others. We thought about getting the Page curation tools and twinkle to automatically remove it, but honestly getting rid of the template altogether is a better solution, as there isn't any need for it, and it is so uncommon as to confuse reviewers when they find it in the wild. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 06:59, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
