Margate Football Club is an English football team based in the seaside resort of Margate, Kent, currently playing in the National League South. The club was known for a number of years during the 1980s as Thanet United. The club was founded in 1896 and joined the Southern Football League in 1933. After a spell in the Kent League after World War II the team returned to the Southern League in 1959 and remained there until 2001 when they gained promotion to the Football Conference, the highest level of English non-league football. Their stay at this level saw the team forced to groundshare with other clubs due to drawn-out and problematic redevelopment work at their Hartsdown Park stadium, and during the three years spent away from their own ground they were expelled from the Conference National and subsequently relegated to the Isthmian League. The team, nicknamed "The Gate", have to date reached the third round proper of England's premier cup competition, the FA Cup, on two occasions. On the second of these occasions they played Tottenham Hotspur, a First Division team and the reigning UEFA Cup holders. (Full article...)

  • Comment: Nice thought, and normally would be a good choice. But many of the ref links are down – eight of the first ten I checked – and there are uncited statements at various points in the text. Promoted 2007; attempts have been made to update the article, but loads more needs to be done before it is main page-worthy. Is anyone prepared to do this? Brianboulton (talk) 15:56, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'll have a go. Dweller might help too....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 08:04, 10 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Great: as it's not date-related there's no special hurry. Brianboulton (talk) 14:50, 10 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
...which is lucky as I think it needs a bit more work than I thought at first glance...Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 06:34, 11 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've started going through it as if it were an FAC candidate. Hope that's the right approach. It won't be a swift one, though. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 10:10, 12 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. I owe Cas about 5 trillion favours. Happy to help. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 14:55, 10 April 2016 (UTC) Main contributors to this article are ChrisTheDude and the fairly recently inactive Pk0503. Hopefully, Chris will see this ping and I'll try to drop Pk0503 a line. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 10:20, 12 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the article was originally sourced to Jeff Trice's Margate F.C. History website, which he seems to have taken down, so fixing the links would require a lot of use of the Wayback Machine....... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 10:33, 12 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That source is mostly used in the Notable former players section and the Managers one. The former could be dispensed with, with a link to a Category. The latter is problematic anyway, because a lot of the names aren't sourced anywhere. We could cut it back to a sourced list of recent managers, or find a comprehensive list, or just talk about the current one? --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 11:23, 12 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The unsourced managers are covered by ref 69, which says that the info in the section comes from a specific page on Trice's site "except where otherwise noted"...... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 12:05, 12 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

So, a lot of improvements have now been made. Deadlinks definitely need fixing before we can consider Main Page. What else? --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 07:49, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

We really need to trawl through the British Newspaper Archive as I think we might find some sources there (also good for other minor clubs). I forgot to renew and I think my access is stale...will check. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 08:35, 18 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Deadlinks are all done. I think we can approve this for scheduling. --Dweller (talk) Become old fashioned! 14:51, 19 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Good work, but it's not ready yet. You need to check out the links in refs 16 and 17 which don't seem to go to the right places. Also there are still a number of uncited statements in the text. See: "Return to Hartsdown Park", ends paras 2 and 3; "Colours and crest", end para 1; "Supporters", end para 1; "Statistics and records", end para 3. Brianboulton (talk) 16:01, 20 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Coordinator's note: I've kept this open because serious efforts have been made to tackle many of issues, but I see that little has been done about the uncited statements which still stand out at the ends of numerous paragraphs. I'll keep the nom open just a few more days in the hope that this point can be addressed. Brianboulton (talk) 09:14, 11 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
