Uploading a file from someone else

Use the following form to upload a work made by someone else who has given permission for it to be used on Wikipedia, or a file that has been released under a "free license". To upload a work of a different kind, please return to Wikipedia:Upload.

Please read this important message first
Wikipedia does not accept images that are licensed for "non-commercial" use, licensed only to Wikipedia, for which permission is required for reuse, or that do not permit derivative works to be created. There are several reasons for this policy, but the short version is that Wikipedia's mission is to provide free content and having images encumbered by restrictive licensing schemes runs counter to that mission.

However, images which are released into the public domain or released under a free license, such as FAL or an appropriate Creative Commons license can be used. For the purposes of Wikipedia, a "free license" means one that permits anyone to reuse the image for any reason, including commercial purposes.

Please see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for a sample letter of permission, if the image is not already uploaded under a "free license".

If the copyright holder agrees to release the image

If the copyright holder agrees to release the image under a free license such as Creative Commons Attribution(-ShareAlike), please forward that letter to "permissions-en AT wikimedia DOT org" if it is not apparent from the source URL of the image. This ensures that the Wikipedia Foundation has a record of the license in case questions should arise at a later time.

When uploading, please clearly indicate in the summary below:

  1. The original source of the image, including the copyright holder's name and, if applicable, the URL where you downloaded the image
  2. A statement about the license status of the image (What license is it released under?)

Note: Go here and here to ask image and media questions. For questions or comments about the upload page itself please go to its talk page.
