Introduction[edit]

The Columbian half dollar is a commemorative coin that was issued by the United States Mint in 1892 and 1893. It was the first traditional United States commemorative coin, and was issued to raise funds for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and to mark the quadricentennial of Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the Americas.

Obverse design[edit]

The obverse of the Columbian half dollar features a bust of Christopher Columbus, and was the first American coin to depict a historical person.

Reverse design[edit]

The reverse features a port view of the Santa María above two hemispheres, flanked by the date 1492.
