Description
[edit]Improve the quality of wiki pages dealing with organic reactions. Only the Aldol reaction so far is featured status and a great deal more reactions require clean up and expansion M.Levin 21:14, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

- MichChemGSI (talk) 18:21, 18 January 2011 (UTC) I support the project and would like to join. My students will be editing quite a few reactions this semester and they have been instructed to look at the Aldol reaction as an example to work from.[reply]
Discussion
[edit]- Wouldn't this be better as WP:WikiProject Organic chemistry ? 65.93.14.196 (talk) 05:38, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- You may want to get in touch and coordinate with User:MichChemGSI, who is working on a project to get his class contribute annotated animations of reaction mechanisms to wikipedia. Jon C (talk) 06:23, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A few comments:
- certainly there is a lot of work to be done in this area - articles like Grignard reaction and Diels-Alder reaction really should be brought to FA status - and so a dedicated WikiProject makes sense to me
- I would like to recognise the contribution of user:Mdlevin, who presently has Weinreb ketone synthesis, Saegusa-Ito oxidation, and Johnson-Corey-Chaykovsky reaction all up for GA, and recently got Oxaziridine to GA status
- the IP editor's suggestion of an Organic Chemistry WikiProject rather than a narrower Organic Reactions WikiProject makes sense to me, though it does open the scope up quite a bit

- Thanks! And while I appreciate the recognition I have to point out that Oxaziridine was actually User:DMelvinKaphan. And I agree, there are a number of organic reactions that plenty of students taking organic chemistry read about on wikipedia and it would be good to have those up to par. I suggest an even broader scope, which is that you put all of this energy into WP:WikiProject Chemistry or WP:WikiProject Chemicals. Wikipedia is not best served by creating another tiny WikiProject when the existing ones would really benefit from some enthusiasm. If you are convinced that organic chemistry can't be discussed in the presence of other types of chemistry, then please consider setting up a WP:TASKFORCE under one of the existing projects.
The bottom line is this: You've got a lot of work to do. Setting up a WikiProject involves a lot of overhead (e.g., creating categories) that you could completely bypass, in favor of getting some real work done, if you joined one of the existing projects.
