Description[edit]

The intended wiki is a searchable and browsable Quran dictionary of all terms in all languages. Each term points to all the verses in which it appears including reference to chapter name and verse number. The basic idea is to facilitate accurate, efficient access to quality Quran text in all languages. The Quran is a widely distributed book sacred to Muslims and of interest to non-Muslims all over the world. Wikimedia is an ideal host for this project because it is the most reliable platform for enabling both the access and the contribution of knowledge necessary for success. Wikimedia enjoys high credibility worldwide.

As a start over the past year, I have developed a database of all Quran terms in the Arabic language. The number of terms is almost 50,000. Each term points to the specific verse(s) where it has appeared. The text of the verse is available, in addition to the chapter's name and the verse number. The Arabic language roots of those terms have also been added to the table to enhance the quality of the search. Then I started with the English language. I have added a credible English language translation of the meanings for each verse in each chapter. Then translated all the Arabic terms to the English language to facilitate more accurate search. So, Each record in the database now contains:

  1. Arabic term
  2. Arabic root
  3. Arabic verse text
  4. Chapter name
  5. Verse number
  6. English term
  7. English verse text

The final searchable and browsable wiki will contain:

  1. The term in all languages
  2. The associated verse text in Arabic
  3. The associated verse text in all languages

This wikiproject should be of interest to a wide audience. For example, anyone interested in the Islamic culture or the Islamic faith which are of significance to more than a billion people worldwide. Anyone interested in the formal Arabic language which was completely preserved by the Quran. Whether they are Islamic, Arab or belong to any another tradition, culture or language, they can all contribute to the wiki and/or research the rich content for a wide variety of academic disciplines.

Wiktionary is a fascinating achievement that could serve as a model for this project.


Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
This is a specific subject dictionary project in all languages that does not exist yet. Future growth possibilities for this project include a Quran Thesaurus.

I expect to be the first to join. I expect that the project will generate strong global interest. Also, I am prepared to host the project's domain, website and data if this is required by Wikimedia.

Discussion[edit]

There are a few reference works relating to the contents of the Quran, including some of the terminological issues, and I could see perhaps getting together people to ensure that all the keys concepts of the Quran are discussed here. As a suggestion, I think a good step would be to locate such reference works, find what they cover, particularly the separate entries in the roughly encyclopedic reference sources, and maybe focus attention on developing content here roughly analogous to that of the reference works found.
