Description[edit]

This project would seek to improve articles related to all aspects of applied linguistics and experimental linguistics. Subject areas within the scope of this WikiProject would include bilingualism and multilingualism, first and second language acquisition, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, language education, computational linguistics, evolutionary linguistics, linguistic anthropology, forensic linguistics, conversation analysis, contrastive linguistics, sign linguistics, language assessment, literacies, discourse analysis, lexicography, stylistics, pragmatics, language planning and policies, translation, internet linguistics, and computer-mediated communication (CMC). — Mr. Stradivarius ♫ 03:27, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
Applied linguistics is a large academic subject area, but at the moment there is not a WikiProject that covers it adequately. WikiProject Linguistics would be the closest, but at the moment it is just an umbrella project for WikiProject Languages, WikiProject Writing systems, WikiProject Phonetics, WikiProject Etymology, and WikiProject Theoretical Linguistics. WikiProject Languages, WikiProject Education, and WikiProject Sociology all touch on the subject area, but they are big enough and separated enough that no real collaboration on applied linguistics articles is organized from them. — Mr. Stradivarius ♫ 03:49, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That's basically what I thought when I saw this proposal. Why isn't this just a taskforce in the Linguistics WikiProject? It's not like that project has an unweildy number of editors (~50 listed: God knows how many are active), so why doesn't this belong there? VanIsaacWScontribs 07:04, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You might have a point there. Maybe this could call for a restructuring of the WikiProject Linguistics tree in general? We could make Theoretical Linguistics a taskforce of WikiProject Linguistics, and possibly do the same for WikiProject Phonetics and WikiProject Etymology as well. — Mr. Stradivarius ♫ 07:17, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, there are so many random projects I had no idea existed. I think what you propose would be the best course of action. Co-ordinate with Linguistics to get Theoretical Linguistics subsumed as a taskforce and create Applied Linguistics as a taskforce also. Nightw 20:40, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm not convinced that this area is large enough and distinct enough to have a completely new WikiProject, considering it's effectively a subset of an existing (and small) WikiProject. However, if the current structure of projects & taskforces needs tidying up to better serve "applied linguistics", I would support that. bobrayner (talk) 11:10, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • It looks like the way to go might be converting the smaller WikiProjects into task forces of WikiProject Linguistcs and turning this proposal into the Applied Linguistics Task Force.
