From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Michelin Guide task force Style Guide
Below is a style guide to creating Michelin guide-related lists and articles established by consensus among participants of WikiProject Michelin Guide. Please discuss this style guide on the WikiProject Style Guide talk page if you have any ideas about how to fine tune these guidelines.

General

[edit]

Michelin Guide-related articles should be written so that everyone can understand its content, not just Michelin Guide readers. The following guidelines should be followed in order for an article to be classified as a B-Class article, in order to be nominated and passed as a Good Article nomination, and/or as a Featured article candidate.

List articles

[edit]

List articles for Michelin-starred restaurants should follow a consistent format.

Title

[edit]

Lists should follow a consistent naming convention: List of Michelin-starred restaurants in XXX with XXX indicating the region covered by the list. The region should follow the region published by the Michelin Guide however in some instances it may be relevant to separate into countries or major cities. Michelin-starred is a compound adjective of restaurant and should be hyphenated in the article title.

Short description

[edit]

Although not necessary, if creating a short description, it should be consistent amongst other Michelin-starred restaurant list articles. The most commonly used syntax is, "List of restaurants in XXX with a Michelin-star rating", with XXX representing the region of the list article.

Spelling conventions

[edit]

Spelling conventions should be based on the region referenced by the article. American chefs, restaurants and lists should be in American English, while Canadian chefs, restaurants and lists should be based on Canadian English, etc. and referenced using the below tags on the relevant talk pages:

{American English} {Canadian English} {British English}

Lead section

[edit]

Introductory sentence

[edit]

The introductory sentence should be consistent with other Michelin-starred restaurant list articles and reference the contents of the list page. "This article contains a[n] [in]complete list of Michelin-starred restaurants in XXX, with XXX representing the region being discussed by the list article.

Introductory paragraph

[edit]

Following the introductory sentence, a background on the Michelin Guide should be provided along with context to the specific list.

List section(s) and table(s)

[edit]
  • It may be not be practical to have one list depending on the number of years for the region and separating into multiple lists may be necessary, ideally separated by decade.
  • List section should be titled "List(s)" or "XXXX – XXXX lists" with XXXX representing the year range of the list. Alternatively, Michelin-starred restaurant list(s) would also be acceptable but should be consistent among the Michelin-starred list pages.
  • Ideally all years are listed for the region (assuming data availability) not just the most recent years, (per WP:RECENTISM)
  • For list articles with multiple tables, the tables should be listed in reverse chronological order with the most recent at the top.

Wikitable format

[edit]

The following columns should be included on all Michelin-starred restaurant articles. Items thst should not be included in the table are chefs and year the establishment opened and highlighting surrounding the first year included on the list.

  • Sortable headers: A sortable Wikitable (plain row headers and left-aligned text) should be used to manage the restaurant list and should have a heading at the top of the table indicating "Michelin-starred restaurants", bolded and centered on the table.
  • Column headings: Column headings should identify the restaurant name, cuisine (i.e. French) and location which should reference the city and neighborhood (separated by an en dash) (i.e Manhattan – Lower East Side), if applicable with subsequent columns representing each year.
  • Unrated years: For years where a restaurant does not have a Michelin star it should be labeled with a sort dash , centered in the cell.
  • Rated years: Each year should be referenced by a color-coded Michelin star, (i.e. scope="row" style="background-color:#FAF0BE" | 1 Michelin star, scope="row" style="background-color:#E0FFFF" | 2 Michelin stars, or scope="row" style="background-color:#9ccdff" | 3 Michelin stars ). Other ratings such as Bib gourmand or green stars should not be reflected in "Michelin-starred list pages."
  • 'No guide' year(s): For a year(s) after the inaugural edition for that region where Michelin did not publish a guide for a given region, the column for the year(s) should be labeled 'No guide' and shaded in a light gray background.
  • Referencing a closed restaurant: The table should be updated whenever a restaurant closes (temporarily or permanently) and should include a source reference in the cell in which the year the restaurant closed. The cell should have a light gray background text-aligned to the center and labeled Closed or Temporarily closed in an italics font.
  • Reference row: A dedicated locked row at the bottom of the table should be used to contain source references for the rating for each year.
  • First year on list: It is not necessary to highlight restaurants for the first year on the Michelin-star list.

Key table

[edit]
  • A key table should be included below the list indicating the definition of the rating and associated color coding. The key should only show stars that are relevant to the table. If the Michelin-starred list only has 1 and 2-star restaurants, then the key should only show for 1 and 2-stars and the 3-star rating should be hidden.

An example is below:

Key
1 Michelin star Indicates a restaurant with one Michelin star
2 Michelin stars Indicates a restaurant with two Michelin stars
3 Michelin stars Indicates a restaurant with three Michelin stars

[edit]
  • Include relevant articles in a bulleted list format where useful.
  • Links to relevant portals such as Food can be included in this section. Utilizing a portal bar at the bottom of this section keeps the section looking organized and consistent among other Michelin-starred list pages.

References

[edit]

Articles must meet the requirement for verifiability and include reliable sources with inline citations. Any contentious material or personal information regarding a living person must strictly abide by this guideline. Be mindful of overciting and balancing redundant citations in lead sections or infoboxes

Bibliography

[edit]

When available, the printed publication information should be included. A bulleted list, usually ordered chronologically, of the works created by the subject of the article.

[edit]

The final section, which is not mandatory, contains relevant external links in a bulleted list format.

Below external links, include relevant navboxes

[edit]

Navigation templates should be added to the base of the page where relevant and sorted alphabetically. For Michelin restaurants, typically templates for a list of restaurants and Michelin (see below) are included but other template boxes can be included that are relevant to the main article such as location-based templates.

Categories

[edit]

Categories should be present at the end of each article and sorted alphabetically.
