Requests for assessment

[edit]

Editors can self-assess articles against the five B-class criteria(FAQ) up to and including C-Class. If you have made significant improvements to an article against one or more of B-class criteria and would like an outside opinion on a new rating for it, please feel free to list it below, specifying which criteria you have worked on. If you feel unable to assess against one or more of the B-class criteria, please say so when posting. Requests for formal A-Class review should be made at the review department. Please consider entering articles you have improved in the military history article writing contest.

Experienced assessors are encouraged to take a look at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators#AutoCheck report for January and check a few of ≈ B-Class assessments. Feel free to downgrade them if you consider they don't meet one or more the criteria. Please also delete any that you have checked. See also Wikipedia:WikiProject Spaceflight/Assessment, whose articles often overlap with military history topics.

  • Gerald Edge: new article for a British flying ace of WWII, please assess. Thanks, Zawed (talk) 10:19, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    Bot beat me to it again! I agree. B class. Donner60 (talk) 02:17, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hercules Huncks: Colonel in New Model Army. I'd like to know in what respects, if any, this does not meet the B-class criteria (except for illustrations, which I do not have) Thanks. I'm new here. ETA: Thanks! That is exactly the information I needed. Lois Hacker (talk) 16:38, 15 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
An article cannot be assessed higher than start class if it does not satisfy criterion b=5 requiring an illustration or infobox. An infobox satisfies this requirement without need for an illustration as well. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Military history#Templates/Infobox templates.
All major points require a citation. This is interpreted by the bot and human assessors to require a citation at the end of each paragraph. This is shown at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Academy/Citations and references#When to cite. I am not aware of any other article where this is explicitly stated and unfortunately, I think most users, especially new ones, probably don't read this one.
The article has two paragraphs that do not end in citations. "He, too, became a soldier" and "Both Axtell and Francis Hacker, who had signed the order to the executioner, were executed." It is not assumed that a previous citation covers the uncited material at the end of an article and often it does not. Without the citations, neither the bot nor a human assessor will assess the article any higher than C class because criterion b2 is not satisfied. C class might be achieved with the infobox alone but the lead probably also needs expansion as noted below.
I am not completely sure why the bot also showed that the coverage and accuracy criterion was not met. I am reasonably sure, however, it is because the lead does not fully summarize the major points in this rather detailed article. Another short paragraph would likely suffice.
As to a format matter, no spaces are put between a period and a citation or between citations.
The article is well written and contains considerable information. I think these additional requirements for a higher assessment class should not be too difficult to meet. Donner60 (talk) 03:10, 16 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Start class. It fails B1 (referencing) because the last sentence of the third paragraph in "Family" and the first paragraph of "Restoration" lack citations. It also uses bare URLs. It fails B5 (supporting materials) because (as you acknowledge) there are no images, but this could be overcome with the addition of an no infobox. @Lois Hacker: You have probably seen this by now, but to close the loop on this page, I note that Hawkeye7 has reassesed the article as B class after your recent improvements to the article. Thanks. Donner60 (talk) 03:44, 19 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
