Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/NRHP Fall 2013 Photo Contest

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The contest starts on September 1, 2013 and will run for the entire http://wikilovesmonuments.us/ Wiki Loves Monuments - US], but is not an official part of their "Best Photo" contest (which has cash prizes). Rather this is the place to be to have fun and earn barnstars If you like having fun taking photos of historical places and buildings, you're in the right place! Photographers new to WP:NRHP are especially encouraged to participate. Challenge yourself and share your passion!

Different editors or Wikipedia projects can sponsor their own photo challenges below. The rules are that:

  1. The photos must be uploaded to Commons as part of the WLM-US 2013 contest.
  2. All registered users on Wikipedia may participate. If you are not registered, please click here.
  3. The sponsoring editor or project makes their own challenge, sets their own rules, and judges the results.
  4. The challenge must be related to photos of National Register of Historic Places sites.[1]
  5. Non-monetary prizes (e.g. barnstars) must be offered.

Participants in the contest must report their own results on this page in the form of photo links, thumbnails or diffs, which should show they they've met the conditions of the challenge. Judges must announce their decisions on this page before October 15, 2013. Note that judges may not need to check all the self-reported results on this page, but in some cases only the top 2 or 3 self-reported results. The decisions of the judges are final. The "best photo" prizes are not decided here, but rather by [http://wikilovesmonuments.us/rules/ Wiki Loves Monuments

'Details and definitions' County lists - All NRHP sites are listed by county or sometimes in subdivisions of counties, e.g. [[National Register of Historic Places listings in Washington County, Ohior National Register of Historic Places listings in Evanston, Illinois All of these are considered to be "county lists" for the purposes of this contest. These lists should be easily accessible by checking the state lists, e.g.List of RHPs in TN or by a link under "See also" in the main article on the county. National Historic Landmark s are almost all also listed as NRHP sites. Lists of NHLs can be accessed via List of National Historic Landmarks Non-illustrated site - if the county list did not have a photo or other illustration of a site before September 1, 2013 it is considered to be "non-illustrated." If a site is already illustrated on a county list, and the challenge does not specify "non-illustrated site", then a photo of the site is eligible. Address-restricted (AR) site - the NRHP lists some sites as "Address restricted," in order to protect archeological and other sensitive sites from looting. Unfortunately they have made some obvious mistakes on this designation, and have no method of updating this restriction. Therefore WP:NRHP accepts photos of these sites.

  • Photo links and galleries - in many cases, all you need to do to self report is to include a link to your photo in the following format [[:File:Filename.jpg|short label which will look something like :File:Merit Underwear Shoemakersville BerksCo PA.JPG|Underwear factory"Remember the colon in front of ":File". If there are "gallery" tags below a challenge, the judge wants to see your photos on this page. Just place the filename of your photo tags below the challenge.

Diffs - In some cases the judge may want to see a specific edit. To self-report that you've met the conditions of this type of challenge, go to your "My contributions" tab and click on "diff" next to the edit where you added photos to an article. Then copy the entire url and place it beneath the challenge you want to self-report on in single square brackets, http://www.wikipedia.org/w/index.phptNational_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_South_Philadelphia&nd your self-report is done for more help on diffs. Subjective judging - for some of the challenges, by their very nature, judging must be subjective and you may disagree with the result. Kudos to the judges for taking on this potentially controversial responsibility. Of course, if you really disagree with the result, you may award a barnstar to whomever you consider the winner, all by yourself! A photo may be used to satisfy the conditions of multiple challenges. https://www.seksun_komsan.org.co.th join/group

I think Canada should count. Faolin42 (talk) 01:53, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't count Canada for my entries and the rules are specific about this being a US contest. Royalbroil 03:23, 1 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Added new image of Washington's Crossing for NJ NHL list, previous image had been deleted in 2010. Zeete (talk) 19:59, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Without detracting from your contribution, this is an odd one. The NHL seems to cover two state parks in NJ and PA, both of which are illustrated. The NHL article seems to have an image of the famous painting instead of a photo. dm (talk) 20:18, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree that the current entry is odd. One thought is to rename the entry "Washington Crossing State Parks" (note plural, name on NRHP 66000650, rather than "Washington's Crossing", which is not the name on the NHL, "Washington Crossing") and remove the NRHP infobox, and the painting by Leutze. Next, add an NRHP infobox to the NJ state park. And then relink references to the old entry with appropriate links to either of the state parks. So on the NHL list for NJ, the link would be to the NJ state park, but with the name "Washington Crossing". I took the photo to show the landing spot, the Delaware River, and the NJ state park sign. What do you think? Zeete (talk) 22:32, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's too gray of an area. It had an image before. Sorry, but I'm going to not award a barnstar for this category. I was expecting many NHL images to be uploaded by the winner. I suppose most of the NHL already had images. Royalbroil 01:31, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Challenge #4 Most Unusual Type of Listing

[edit]

A barnstar will be awarded to the photographer who adds a photo for the National Register of Historic Places type of site that is the oddest or most unusual.

There are lots of good entries in this challenge. I felt that a cave is the most unusual type of site to be registered. Thanks for all of the entries in this category! Royalbroil 02:34, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Challenge #5 Most Unusual Building

A barnstar will be awarded to the photographer who adds a photo for the National Register of Historic Places building that is the oddest or most unusual.

Some time ago, I photographed the garage at the Harvey P. Sutton House, on the chance that it was part of Wright's design; but it turned out to be a later addition. Now I know: carports mean the genuine Wright article; garages mean a second-rate imitation. Ammodramus (talk) 22:47, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wright was all for carports, but some of the carports pictured have been converted into a small theater where visitors see a film about Fallingwater and are invited to join the Western Pennsylvania Nature Conservancy. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 22:55, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I found the car dealership shaped like a ship to be the most unusual "building". It's a very unusual roadside attraction, the type that I enjoy finding on my travels! Royalbroil 02:48, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Challenge #6 Interstate Traveler

[edit]

In order to encourage NRHP photographic road trips, a barnstar will be awarded for the two photos, uploaded by the same photographer during the contest period, that are the greatest distance apart. An honorable mention barnstar will be awarded to everyone with two photographs at least 1000 miles apart.

Sponsor:Smallbones (talk)

To self-report your two most distant photos, just include both photos and their geographical coordinates (e.g. in the form {{Coord|xx.xxxx|N|xx.xxxx|W}} in the gallery below, and include the distance calculated from Google Maps. You can copy the coords from the county lists. Note that Google maps can give contradictory distances, and we will check for the shortest distance calculated:

example - Maine to California
- New York to Georgia = 851 miles  ;->

Challenge #7 State traveler

[edit]

In order to encourage NRHP photographic road trips, a barnstar will be awarded for the two photos, uploaded by the same photographer during the contest period, that are the greatest distance apart but within the same state. An honorable mention barnstar will be awarded to everyone with two photographs at least 250 miles apart.

Challenge #8 Most Sites added in a Single County/Community List

[edit]

A barnstar will be awarded to the photographer who adds the most of their own photographs to previously non-illustrated sites in any single county. (The county list need not become fully-illustrated.) If the county was divided into lists by city/community before the start of the contest, then that community list is eligible. Sites on community lists may not be added to a county total if they had been on a separate list. State lists are not eligible. An honorable mention barnstar will be awarded to everyone with at least 25 additions to a single list.

Challenge #12 Scavenger Hunt

[edit]

A barnstar will be awarded to the photographer, who for any state, posts one photo in each of the following categories or types of NRHP sites:

  • 1. non-railroad transportation - e.g. road bridges, canals, boats, planes, automobile show rooms, or wagon ruts
  • 2. a historic district
  • 3. a single-family residence (should be easy!)
  • 4. a multi-family residence, e.g. an apartment building (2 families minimum), or other kinds of living arrangements for multiple unrelated individuals, such as prisons, dormitories, convents, nursing homes
  • 5. industrial building or structure, e.g. a factory, warehouse, gristmill, or windmill.
  • 6. religious building or cemetery, e.g. a church or synagogue, any cemetery.
  • 7. a school (or former school), including college campuses
  • 8. other government building, e.g. courthouses, city halls, post offices
  • 9. entertainment or alcohol related, e.g. a theater, bar, restaurant, hotel, brewery, or distillery
  • 10. small town, in any town, village, township, CDP, etc. with an article on Wikipedia and a population less than 10,000 people.

While a photo may fit into many categories, e.g. a photo of wagon ruts next to a school and post office in a small town historic district, only one photo per historic site or historic district may be used for this challenge, and it counts for only one category. Please self-report by including one photo link per category (10 total photos maximum) in the following format

[[:File:Photo of a bridge.jpg|1]], [[:File:Photo of a HD.jpg|2]], .... Name of State, Total number of categories filled ~~~~

Barnstars will be awarded to any photographer with photos in all 10 categories, or if no photographer fills all 10 categories for a state, the one who has the most categories filled in that state.
