Wikipedia:WikiProject Systems/First draft

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
TIMELINE
  • 1945–55 General Systems Theory (proposed by Ludwig von Bertalanffy and others)
  • 1948–55 cybernetics (W. Ross Ashby, Norbert Wiener) Mathematical theory of the communication and control of systems through regulatory feedback. Closely related: "control theory"
  • 1956 Ludwig von Bertalanffy, Anatol Rapoport, Ralph Garard, Kenneth Boulding establish Society for the Advancement of General Systems Theory.
  • 1970 catastrophe theory (René Thom, E.C. Zeeman) Branch of mathematics that deals with bifurcations in dynamical systems, classifies phenomena characterized by sudden shifts in behavior arising from small changes in circumstances.
  • 1980 chaos theory (David Ruelle, Edward Lorenz, Mitchell Feigenbaum, Steve Smale, James A. Yorke) Mathematical theory of nonlinear dynamical systems that describes bifurcations, strange attractors, and chaotic motions.
  • 1990 complex adaptive systems (CAS) (John H. Holland, Murray Gell-Mann, Harold Morowitz, W. Brian Arthur, ...) The "new" science of complexity which describes emergence, adaptation and self-organization, all of which are basic system principles, was established mainly by researchers of the Santa Fe Institute (SFI) and is based on agents and computer simulations and includes multi-agent systems (MAS) which have become an important tool to study social and complex systems. The study of complex systems today is often subsumed under the term 'complexity theory'. (see for example Edgar Morin, Stuart Kauffman and Stephen Wolfram, passim).

Project overview

[edit]

This project focuses on creating and improving content related to the theory and practice of system in science and society. This project is:

  • An initiative to organize, thematize, personalize and actualize these information on Wikipedia.
  • A place tot work together to initiate and coordinate these efforts
  • an experiment to create a more emprical approach to the theory and practice of systems.
  • Parent projects:

Wikipedia:WikiProject Philosophy
Wikipedia:WikiProject Science
  • Child project:

To do list with participants (draft)

[edit]

All participants can add new items, relist items, and sign in per item:

1. The organization of categories and articles about and around systems.

2. To play an active role in the discussions around the elimination of the Category:System and to search for an alternative.

3. To play an active role in the discussions around the elimination and renaming of the Category:Complex systems and to search for an alternative.

5. Writing, editing and or monitoring articles about systems.

6. The creation of lists to gather more empirical data around systems i some lists:

7. To build up and maintain the WikiProject Systems projectpages.

Lists to gather more empirical data

[edit]
A. Wikipedia:WikiProject Systems/List of historical highlights for systems
B. Wikipedia:WikiProject Systems/List of important dates (per year) for systems
C. Wikipedia:WikiProject Systems/List of images of systems
D. Wikipedia:WikiProject Systems/List of systems organizations
E. Wikipedia:WikiProject Systems/List of Systems scientists

Current targets (draft)

[edit]

All participants can add new items and relist items here:

  1. The organization of categories and articles about and around systems.
  2. Maybe putting these categories and articles under the scoop of WikiProjectSystems.
  3. Maybe meeting with other WikiProjects in this field, see [1]
  4. Maybe creating an Portal:Systems or a Portal:Systems science, see [2]

Possible new projects

Participants

[edit]

This project is open to all Wiki editors. Adding your name indicates that you are willing to work with others on the development of Wikipedia's Systems articles, and be an involved member of the project:

  1. Mdd: I have a Master's degree (1991) in Systems Engineering from the Delft University of Technology. I started this project with Jonathan Bowen 20 April 2007.
  2. Jonathan Bowen 01:53, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
