The railroad of Augusta Northern Railway, hereinafter referred to as the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, situated in the western part of the State of South Carolina, extending from Ward north to Saluda, a distance of 11.078 miles. The carrier also owns 0.975 mile of yard tracks and sidings, or a total of 12.053 miles of all tracks.

Corporate history.—The carrier was incorporated as the Newberry, Whitmire and Augusta Railroad Company, by a special act of the Legislature of South Carolina, February 21, 1906, and authorized to construct and operate a railroad from any point on the North Carolina State line through or by the town of Whitmire or other point that might be found more desirable, thence on through Newberry, Saluda, and Edgefield Counties to Augusta, Ga. Operation was to be in whole or in part by steam or electricity. By amendment of the charter, in a special act of February 23, 1910, the corporate name was changed to Augusta Northern Railway. The carrier's principal office is at Newberry, S. C. Its property was constructed by the Independent Construction Company, all of whose capital stock was owned by the promoters of the carrier. The work of construction was begun in September, 1910, and completed in the spring of 1912. It began operating as a common carrier in February, 1912.
