Washington and Western Maryland Railroad

[edit]

Location and General Description of Property

[edit]

The railroad of the Washington and Western Maryland Railroad Company, hereinafter called the Washington and Western Maryland, is a single-track branch line, located entirely within the District of Columbia, and extends from the Maryland-District of Columbia line near Delecarlia Tunnel to Aqueduct Bridge, Georgetown, a distance of 3.672 miles. This property also forms a part of the Georgetown branch projecting from Washington, D. C., to Georgetown Junction, Md.

Introductory

[edit]

The Washington and Western Maryland is a Federal corporation, having its principal office at Washington, D.C. Information obtained from the accounting records of the company have been supplemented by data compiled from the records of the Baltimore and Ohio. The company is controlled by the Baltimore and Ohio through ownership of capital stock. The records reviewed do not indicate that this company, itself, controls any other common-carrier corporation.

The property was operated by the Baltimore and Ohio from date of completion to December 31, 1917. Since January 1, 1918, it has been operated by the United States Railroad Administration as part of the Baltimore and Ohio system.

Corporate History

[edit]

The Washington and Western Maryland was incorporated by an act of Congress, approved March 2, 1889, for the purpose of building a railroad from the Maryland-District of Columbia line to a point near Georgetown in the District of Columbia. Acts of Congress, amending the act of incorporation, were approved June 28, 1906, and May 29, 1908. These acts changed the route of the proposed road and extended the time for building. The company was organized February 11, 1890.

Development of Fixed Physical Property

[edit]

The owned road, 3.672 miles, was acquired by construction. The surveys were made and some grading done as early as the year ended June 30, 1892, but the work was interrupted and the road was not completed until June 25, 1909.

Leased Railway Property

[edit]

The entire property is leased to the Baltimore and Ohio, as stated in the report on that company.
