Welcome to the Wikipedia Wikiproject: United State Public Policy! I am your Campus Ambassador and will serve as one avenue for support as you are developing your review of literature/wikipedia article.

To get started I invite you to go to your userpage in wikipedia and complete the following tasks:

1. Edit your userpage to include a short bio (100 words or less about yourself) - remember your userpage is still public domain.

2. Add the following code to your userpage to share with other wikipedians you are involved in the Public Policy Wikiproject:

Assignment overview

Following are some of the assignment design mandates that we will follow throughout the semester:

  • Your contributions to Wikipedia must be substantive, substantial, and must be articles directly related to U.S. public policy (we have numerous articles to choose from). You can expect to contribute to at least 10-20 paragraphs, or approximately 1,500 words.

Anatomy of Wikipedia Articles

  • Components of a good article
  • How to distinguish between good and bad articles

Referencing on Wikipedia

Assignment: Due Session 4

  • Practice editing features of Wikipedia by leaving a message for a few classmates on their user talk pages.
  • Write a 3-4 paragraph summary version of your literature review in your Wikipedia sandbox
  • Continue research in preparation for expanding your review of literature
  • “Referencing on Wikipedia” how-to compile a bibliography of relevant sources

Introduction to the your online mentors and resources online chat system (IRC)

  • Online Chat System (IRC)- live support
  • Online Ambassador mentors - how to contact

Assignments: Due Session 5

  • Peer review 7 -10 classmate’s articles—leave suggestions and comments on their article discussion pages
  • Add the Wikiproject: United States Public Policy information from my talk page to your Userpage

Benchmark: All students have started editing articles or drafts on Wikipedia.

  • Assess development in your sandbox
  • Contact an Online Ambassador (using their user talk page) as a mentor. Mentors are available to offer advice and assistance as you start editing
  • Invite a mentor to work with you in your sandbox


Assignments:

  • Ask your Online Ambassador (OA) mentor for comments
  • Begin working with OA mentor to polish your short starter article and fix any major transgressions of Wikipedia norms
  • OA will assist in determining when the wikipedia article will move forward as a live article
Wikiproject Session 6: February 28, 2011

  • Revise your article based on peers’ and instructors feedback
  • Determine which Wikipedia Article your Review of Literature aligns with best
  • Contact an Online Ambassador (using their user talk page) as a mentor. Mentors are available to offer advice and assistance as you start editing
  • Invite a mentor to work with you in your sandbox
  • Instructor evaluates student’s article

Assignments:

  • Ask your Online Ambassador (OA) mentor for comments
  • Begin working with OA mentor to polish your short starter article and fix any major transgressions of Wikipedia norms
  • OA will assist in determining when the wikipedia article will move forward as a live article
  • Continue to make revisions based on work with your OA

Upcoming Tasks in which Deadlines will be staggered based on article development:

  • Move your sandbox article into Wikipedia’s main space (live articles)
  • Nominate your article for “Did you know” status, and monitor the nomination for any issues identified by other editors.

Benchmarks: By now, all students have peer-reviewed their classmates’ articles and All students are working with an online ambassador.

Wikiproject Session 7: April 11, 2011

Wikipedia Online Ambassadors will be contacting those moving sandbox to live space or portions.

Wikiproject Session 8: April 18, 2011

In class, conduct an open discussion around the concepts of neutrality, media literacy, and the impact and limits of Wikipedia

Assignment: Due April 25, 2011

  • Add final touches to Wikipedia article
  • Nominate your article for “Good Article” status

Benchmark: By now, all students have submitted a reflective essay on their Wikipedia contributions and experiences.
