Reading

[edit]

This week's assignment consists of two short readings. A primer on Fair Use, and a interpretation on Copyright by a major figure Richard M. Stallman

  1. Fair Use and Copyleft – “Fair Use FAQ.” and “Copyright FAQ” Handout adapted from TeachingCopyright.org, a project of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. http://www.teachingcopyright.org/handout/fair-use-faq http://www.teachingcopyright.org/handout/copyright-faq
  2. Stallman, Richard M. “Misinterpreting Copyright–A Series of Errors.” Free Software, Free Society Selected Essays of Richard M. Stallman. Ed. Joshua Gay. New York: Free Software Foundation, 2002. 77-86. http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/misinterpreting-copyright.html

Questions

[edit]
  1. Fair Use/Copyright: Is there a simpler or more clean-cut way to determine if a given use of a copyright material is fair use than the guidelines being used today?
  2. Stallman: If “the public deserves to get what it wants,” a very democratic approach, then how ought we determine a want of the public (especially in terms of copyright)?

Very Short Survey

[edit]

Complete this 1:30 survey that helps Wikipedia secure funding. They sent me a much longer one, but for your sanity I pared it down to:

  1. Age
  2. Class Level
  3. Previous Wikipedia Experience
  4. Tech Experience

The survey doesn't like 21-year-olds...
