Americans worry about the quality of their civic life and fear its decline. We examine the public sphere's historical, cultural, and political dimensions as well as challenges to the boundaries of American public life. Who is a citizen and thus eligible to participate? What is the role of the University within the public sphere and how can we teach about that subject? The course pays particular attention to concerns about the impact of new media – print, broadcasting, digital – and to a new field of study, Public Humanities. Assignments will take students on-line, into the community, and through Brown’s curriculum to think about social, cultural and political publics.
