This course will look at the tensions and overlaps between open access and contemporary capitalist property regimes and the way digital platforms have allowed for the greater access to the creation, distribution and consumption of culture. Looking at the innovators behind technologies and social frameworks that have allowed for the open web to flourish - from Napster and BitTorrent to Wikipedia, microblogging, and social media activism - it evaluates the impact of cultures of collaboration on helping address global information inequality. Students will also consider this impact as they engage in the collaborative development of open access resources.
