What is a woman? How can we think about gender's linkage to power, race, class, ability, and other forms of difference? And what does any of this have to do with feminism? Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies has a vibrant relationship with Black feminism, Black trans studies, and queer of color critique in the US and transnationally. This course will examine these questions through an introduction to the transdisciplinary field of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Students will examine canonical texts concentrating on theories and interventions in women's studies by people of African descent. Course materials will include academic articles, blog posts, and multimedia (films, music, etc.). No prior knowledge of subject material is required; however, the course will depend upon the student's ongoing development of critical writing, reading, and thinking skills.
