Introduction

Your thinking in the first project in this course, “Developing a Frame of Mind,” considered what it might mean to cultivate a sense of place—to express your thoughts and reflections about our changing relationship with the natural world—and to consider how cultural attitudes and beliefs inform your sense of the common good.

In the second project you will you will be become a member of a Wikipedia community dedicated to contributing content to the encyclopedia Wikipedia and collaborating with others who have chosen to volunteer their time and hard work to provide one of the world's most valuable resources. Our work will be part of WikiProject Nepal designed to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Nepal-related topics.

For eight weeks you will be 1) working in groups to learn more about the natural and cultural history of Nepal and 2) sharing some of what you learn as a member of a global community of people who volunteer their time and hard work to provide one of the world's most valuable digital resources. Our work in this second project is inspired by the UNESCO
Education for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, a a shared agenda to end poverty, fight inequality & injustice, and protect the planet.

We believe that the seventeen SDGs provide a framework for acting on our individual commitments to sustainability by engaging with others around the world who are working to end poverty, fight inequality & injustice, and protect the planet. Our efforts will be on “inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” (goal 4) and on protecting, restoring, and promoting “sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.”

Objectives

Review (and learn from) Wikipedia's coverage of Nepal-related topics
Research knowledge in high-quality sources
Summarize what is known about an area of knowledge and verify the information
Share the summary and citations to allow readers to dig deeper into topics of interest

You will come way from the project with the experience and confidence to participate in a global initiative to make comprehensive, diverse knowledge available to the people around the world.

This week you will create a Wikipedia account, enroll in the Sustainable Wildlife Management Course, and learn more about Wikipedia and how to become a Wikipedian
