In this course students write coherent essays in varied academic formats, both in and out of class, responding to culturally diverse materials and using appropriate technology. Students focus on critical and analytical skills through reading and listening and study aspects of argumentation including formulating theses; researching and identifying sources; evaluating and documenting sources; and communicating persuasively across contexts, purposes, and media.

WikiCOIL Project
Students from the U.S. and Russia will be collaborating in editing and translating articles.

This semester, Professor Gallardo’s ENA101 students at LaGuardia Community College, New York, will engage in the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project with Professor Ivannikov’s students at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University in St. Petersburg, Russia. COIL is a teaching and learning tool that connects geographically remote classrooms via digital platforms in order to enhance students’ intercultural communication and expand their understanding of the course content, giving it an international dimension.

The topic for our collaboration is the role of the multilingual online encyclopedia Wikipedia in knowledge production. The 6th most visited site in the world, and with more than 40 million articles in 300+ different languages, Wikipedia is the largest collective human endeavor attempting to represent “the sum of all human knowledge.” Because Wikipedia is an open collaboration community that uses a commons-based peer production model to build its articles, it is an ideal environment for learners of different cultures reach across cultures to create something together.

Learning Goals:

-To learn about Wikipedia by editing and critiquing articles collaboratively

-To reflect about one’s personal experience editing Wikipedia

-To reflect on the impact and challenges of Wikipedia

Ice Breaker

The first step in our assignment will be to introduce ourselves to our “sister” class in St. Petersburg and to share with them your initial impressions of Wikipedia. To do so,

 

By 9/19, write a paragraph  answering the following questions 

 

  • Are you familiar with Wikipedia? If so, how do you usually use it? (Try to give an example)
  • Do you consider Wikipedia reliable? Why? Why not?
  • What kinds of topics should a global encyclopedia like Wikipedia cover? Should these topics be different for different communities? Why? Why not?
  • Do you consider yourself enough of an expert that you could edit Wikipedia? If so, tell us of one or two articles you think you could improve. If not, tell us why not. 

By the end of day on 9/24, join our FlipGrid class. Once there, follow the instructions to create a video to introduce yourself (you will be able to reshoot it and edit it as much as you want). Your introduction should include

 

  • Your name/ How you like to be called
  • Where you live (maybe show photos of the neighborhood?)
  • What your favorite/least favorite part of living there is
  • Your answers to the professor’s questions about Wikipedia

The St. Petersburg students will be posting their videos too, so the next step will be to respond to their videos. You could ask them a question or show interest in a particular piece of information they have shared.

Editing workshop

In the spirit of Aaron Swartz Guerrilla Open Access Manifesto, we will search our databases for articles to help our sister calls in St. Petersburg. I am taking two volunteers to compile this information to send along. 

Woodside

1. Images of Woodside--both what is in Wikimedia Commons and what you take yourselves (2 people)

2. Edit section on Little Manila on article as well as in the article  Filipinos in the New York metropolitan area (2 people) 

3. Edit section on St. Pat's For All, with the option of creating a separate article later (4 people)

4. Images of St. Pat's For All--both what is in Wikimedia Commons and what the LaGuardia Archives provides (2 people)

5. Edit section on Big Bush Park and Lawrence Virgilio Playground (2 people)

6. Edit  Moore-Jackson Cemetery (and link back to Woodside) to include more/recent sources (2 people)

7.  Create a full article for Woodside in Wikivoyage (4 people)
