In class - Pennsylvania, Energy, and Wikipedia

Students will work on groups to enhance Wikipedia sites related to energy in Pennsylvania.  This project will take place over the course of 6 weeks and serve as the mid-term for the course.

Student groups can chose to provide updated content for the following Wiki sites. In general, the material on each site is out of date and does not reflect current Pennsylvania policies.

Renewable Energy in Pennsylvania

Wind Power in Pennsylvania

Solar Power in Pennsylvania

or students can add new sites on other Pennsylvania energy topics including:

Geothermal Energy in PA (no information)

Nuclear Power in PA (currently there is only a list of nuclear power plants)

Energy Efficiency Policy in PA (no information)

or another energy-related topic proposed by the student group.

The following websites provide information on what is currently on Wikipedia for Energy in PA by Category:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Energy_in_Pennsylvania

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Energy_infrastructure_in_Pennsylvania

During the first lab, students will break into groups and decide what topic to work on for their project.   We will then visit the library to meet with a librarian, who will provide guidance to students so they become aware of the information resources available to them.

In class - Introduction to the Wikipedia assignment

Welcome to your Wikipedia assignment's course timeline. This page guides you through the steps you'll need to complete for your Wikipedia assignment, with links to training modules and your classmates' work spaces.

Your course has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page.

Assignment - Get started on Wikipedia

Create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you. (Because of Wikipedia's technical restraints, you may receive a message that you cannot create an account. To resolve this, please try again off campus or the next day.)

Assignment - Lab Forum Entry

Each week you work on the Wiki project you will need to include as part of your lab entry for the Moodle forum the following information: What your group did on the Wiki project including your personal contribution. This will be done at the end of each lab period.

Milestones

This week, everyone should have a Wikipedia account.

Assignment - Evaluate Wikipedia

Do this for the website you've selected to edit in class.  If you are creating a new article find a similar page for another state and review that.  For energy issues, good examples are typically Massachusetts, New York, California, and Texas.

Develop Plan of Action

During Lab 2, groups will identify the content gaps and develop a plan of action for filling those gaps.  Each person in the group should have a gap to fill.  This can be text or a graphic.  Before class ends, describe what gaps you are filling, who is doing what, and each student's next steps to prepare for Lab 3.
