Course Description:
What role does technology play in our lives? Is technology gendered? What would it mean to think about technology in relation to institutional oppressions? Technology is often presented as if it is abstracted from social contexts – as if it is “neutral” from social contexts of gender and gender expression, sexuality, race, class, nation, ability, and other salient social identity categories. In this class, however, we will be interested in exploring how the social realities of gender/sexuality/race have shaped technology – from its construction to its consumption. In particular, we will explore feminist surveillance studies (including questions of “dataveillance,” big data, and predictive analytics); cyberfeminism and technofeminism; and the infrastructure of gender/sexuality in relation to technology.

Student/contributors will be writing and editing entries for key terms related to the topics covered in class.
