Digital media are a daily part of college students’ lives. From websites to podcasts to social media, our students are constantly interacting with various types of new and emerging media. It is impossible to ignore how these technological advancements have impacted the ways students learn and write. Thus, this course is designed as an experiential learning lab where students help build, analyze, and sustain a digital media archive. Through doing so, students will: (1) be trained in identifying, systematically collecting, cataloguing, and coding qualitative data sources on a specific topic related to crime, law, and society; (2) clean and prepare these sources for presentation on public-facing digital platforms; and (3) critically evaluate how digital tools have impacted their writing style.

More generally, this course provides an opportunity for students to gain real-world field study experience through participation in a project at the intersection of academic research and community advocacy. Students will both learn about how to collect and archive data, contributing to a digital media archive, and also participate in increasing knowledge about and raising awareness of pressing social issues at the intersection of crime, law, and society. Students will also develop analytic writing and argumentative skills through assignments encouraging them to explore the digital media archive, analyze its contents, write and share accessible summaries of their work on various social media platforms, and reflect on how writing in digital spaces has impacted their academic writing at UCI and/or in other professional environments.
