This Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) Symposium is a faculty development event designed to introduce ACS teachers to the idea that Wikipedia is a generative knowledge community that can and should be integrated into Writing-Intensive courses as both a site of composition and subject of research. On one hand, Instructors will learn how to edit Wikipedia. However, this is not just a technical workshop. By learning about Wikipedia’s educational features, ACS faculty will learn to use Wikipedia as a writing space, which will enable them to show their students that knowledge is socially situated–accessed, produced, and circulated in a community of practice.
One of our primary goals is to explore the ways in which editing Wikipedia relates to the political, social, and economic implications of teaching and learning in web 2.0 environments. Symposium participants will discuss how editing Wikipedia might impact the teaching and assessment of writing, as well as invent specific strategies for addressing the challenges of incorporating this digital medium into their courses. Moreover, participants will participate in “hack sessions” for curriculum development--editing Wikipedia pages and collaborating with other ACS faculty to devise curricular approaches to teaching academic writing and research through Wikipedia editing. For instance, they may propose major assignments or course themes related to truth, trust, respect, credibility, intellectual property, expertise, homogeneity, diversity, or collective intelligence.
