An outpouring of protest has transformed the social, economic and political landscape of contemporary East Asia. Protests have taken the form of historic mass mobilizations as well as everyday acts of protest that are often unnoticed and go unrecorded. This seminar explores how ordinary people engage in protest to express discontent and bring about social change. It also examines how protest operates as transformative events, shaping and reshaping people’s identities, social relationships and everyday sense of time and space as well as their individual and collective aspirations for the future.
