Biology 105/106 is the first semester of a multi-semester introduction to the field of biology. The first semester covers basic principles of molecular and cell biology, and genetics. This course and its sequels will serve as a basis for more specialized courses within the sciences.

In lab we will search for appropriate articles to work on. At the end of the lab, students will submit their nominations, and we will vote on which article to expand.

Using the spreadsheet we have created, you will create a bibliography of the selected references you will use to write your contribution to the article.

Assignment - Create an Outline
  • Draft a detailed outline of your topic reflecting the major points to be made in your subsection of the article and which citation backs up this point.
  • Post the outline in your sandbox.
  • Continue research in preparation for expanding your article by tracking down new citations from the articles you have in hand.

  • Complete a rough draft of your subsection using your outline and post it in your sandbox.

  • Complete the peer review module.
  • Peer review one of your classmates’ articles. Leave suggestions and comments on their talk pages.
  • Copy-edit your own peer-reviewed article.

  • Based on your peer review and comments from the instructor, make the final edits to your document.
  • When approved, create a heading for your work and move the document out of your sandbox to the article.

Write a 1-2 page essay (one page single-spaced or two pages double-spaced) reflecting on your experience editing on Wikipedia.

In class - Review of Class Project

On the last day of class, we will review and celebrate the final product of our project.
