This course is an introductory and partial survey of the world’s mythological traditions assuming no prior knowledge. The focus will be on how individual societies make sense of the world through their myths. We will also look for common elements in the myths we read, and examine some theories regarding how these similarities may have arisen. By the end of class, students will have acquired a broad knowledge of the world’s mythological traditions and the different methodologies used to understand them.
