Does information drive human history? Mythological recurrences say much about cultures that had to adapt their world views while attempting to preserve them. This course examines the cognitive or social bases of mythology, to be pursued from insights in cultural and literary studies, linguistics, the cognitive sciences, Neolithic-anthropology, archeology, etc. The course is designed to help students think about complex problems from a humanistic perspective, making liberal use of the sciences.

Assignment - Choose possible topics

Resource: Editing Wikipedia, page 6

Select potential topics  that relate to your Affinity Group's subject matter and would have Wikipedia pages your group could draft edits to, then find pages on Wikipedia within those topics which lack information or could effectively be added to.

Assignment - Start drafting your contributions

Resource: Editing Wikipedia, pages 7–9

Draft changes to your group's selected Wikipedia page together. I would reccomend setting up a time to meet in your dorm's meeting area(s) (if you guys still live in Easton, the large rec room in the basement/any of the Carillon rooms around it) or any other spot around campus and work through your proposed contributions to your selected page.

Milestones

Everyone has begun writing their article drafts.

In class - Discussion

Week 5

Course meetings
Tuesday, 27 September 2022   |   Thursday, 29 September 2022
Assignment - Exercise

Don't worry about "assigning yourself" the article as mentioned in the exercise. Just research sources which you could reference to add information to your groups selected Wikipedia page.

Week 6

Course meetings
Tuesday, 4 October 2022   |   Thursday, 6 October 2022
Milestones

Each group will be assigned another group's suggested changes to peer review.

Milestones

Everyone has finished drafting changes to their selected article, and will be assigned another group's draft changed to peer review in the near future.

Submit your group's drafted changes on ELMs. Since it is a group assignment, only one person should have to submit, and only the final submission will be graded and used for peer reviews. (Please @outlook.com email me if I forget to make the ELMs assignment a group submission rather than an individual submission, or if you have any other issues or questions in general!)

Week 7

Course meetings
Tuesday, 11 October 2022   |   Thursday, 13 October 2022
Assignment - Peer review assigned article

Guiding frameworkFollow the framework above and use previous experience to give comments on your peers' work (you should be assigned another group's suggested changes). Quality and quantity of comments and suggestions will directly affect the grade you earn for this portion of the assignment.

Milestones

Every student has finished reviewing their assigned articles, making sure that every article has been reviewed.

Assignment - Continue improving & polishing your article + Prepare final submission

Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. You may do more research and find missing information; rewrite the lead section to represent all major points; reorganize the text to communicate the information better; or add images and other media.

You now have some feedback from other students. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft accordinglyThe primary thing that is being graded for this part of the assignment is noted improvement from the initial draft, a lack of changes/improvement will recieve a poor grade. Remember to contact your Group Mentor or Sean at any time if you need further help!

Read Editing Wikipedia page 15 to review a final check-list before completing your assignment.

Assignment - Begin moving your work to Wikipedia

Now that you've improved your draft based on others' feedback and polished your proposed changes, you have the opportunity to actually add to Wikipedia! This is not mandatory, but it would be a real contribution to the online academic space and is encouraged if you and your group and happy with the changes you have proposed.
