Evolution is the major organizing principle of all the life sciences. This course explores the relationship between evolutionary theory and human health and disease. Evolutionary medicine suggests that by bringing an evolutionary perspective to the study and practice of medicine, we can understand not only why we get sick, but also how the human body has evolved to respond to disease. In this course, we will bring this evolutionary perspective to a wide range of medical topics, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, infectious disease, reproduction, mental illness, and more.
