As the US transitions from an industrial to a service-based economy, numerous urban centers, like Detroit, MI, face abandonment of former manufacturing sites with common contaminants such as VOCs, heavy metals, and PAHs. This course explores how these cities identify and remediate polluted sites, emphasizing the environmental and social injustices faced by vulnerable populations. The course aims to unite policy, research, and industry experts to address the handling of contaminants, considering their social, political, ecological, and economic implications.
