I very much like this version, and so far I think it's the best proposal.

"Welcome" box is rather big.
Wikiprojects should be mentionned somewhere
Good article of the day would be nice
Check Zrs's attempt for how to make tidier boxes. Current you have boxes in boxes, and each should stand alone.
I like the Editor of the Month idea, but we'd have to ask the editor if he/she wants to be on the main page, as he'll become a target for vandals and might now the like...
