Removing interlanguage links

Since upgrading to 3.1.0.0 and using the CFD plugin, AWB has occasionally removed interlanguage links at the same time as categories e.g. [1] [2] [3] [4]. I have general fixes turned off. the wub "?!" 13:47, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

• probably that's too greedy! like ignore for [[image:...|, which catches also description of the image!

Using AWB on other wikis

Does one need to register here, before using AWB on another wiki (for example Dutch wiki) or is it enough to let the admins of that wiki know about the case? --huji—TALK 21:27, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Start up problem

Hi. I had AWB running just fine yesterday and now I can't even get it to open. Instead I get "AutoWikiBrowser has encountered a problem and needs to close. 3.1.0.0 and Vista

Just wanted to let you all know that AWB 3.1.0.0 works flawlessly, at least for me, in Vista Ultimate. Whereas:

"Occasionally it stalls when loading. This might well be because you have navigated to a different window: AWB needs to remain in the foreground while loading up a new page. Just click "start" again to give it a nudge."

This doesn't seem to be an issue anymore, whereas I was experiencing it quite often with XP SP2. In case it matters at all, installed framework versions include 1.0.3705, 1.1.4322, 2.0.50727, and 3.0. Hope it helps someone! thadius856_{talk|airports|neutrality} 18:17, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

July 4th

It's all very nice that AWB edits dates to match the MOS, but you need to add an exception for July 4th for editors who are using AWB on autopilot, or who are unfamiliar with American holidays. BlankVerse 10:58, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Google search not working?

For some reason, AWB isn't working for me now. I've got the latest version (3.1.0.0), but when I do a google search that normally should produce hundreds of article names, it says "getting list" and then "list complete!" with no results. Right-to-Left languages

I think for IE you are right. But the text box would experience a problem. There is an option for RightToLeft - "Indicates whether the component should draw right to left for RTL languages". Set as No, with options for inherit and Yes. I think AWB would need to include something based on the system locale, and turn it on. Or just have it on that by default...? Duplicated entries in list

The list is failing to remove duplicated entries. If I click "Make List" to refresh the list when I'm still part-way through, duplicated entries get added and there seems to be no way to persuade AWB to strip them out. Annoying cross-talk between "multiple links" and "search" facilities

If you use the "multiple links" box to find the corresponding entries, when you finish one entry and click on a different entry you get the "no more occurances" message that you would have done had you carried on. This also happens if you click on the "find" button in similar circumstances. (Oh, and isn't that supposed to be "occurrences"?) HTH HAND —Phil | Talk 16:02, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

ABW and regexes

• how to match a string that is not contained in the text? is [^'][^'] an equivalent to not '' ?
• if a regex contain [a-zA-Z], should I set "case sensitive"? does A-Z expression contain also characters from other languages like ą etc.?

As a rule of thumb, I tend to always put caps first for alpha characters ([A-Za-z]) just to be safe. [A-Za-z] would not match non-English characters, as they are in an extended section of each font — some have them, others not, and often times the unicode for them is different. As far as the first question goes, I hope I understand you correctly... Case-sensitive applies more to non-regex replace criteria. For example, say I want to replace all instances of "US" with United States in an article or series of articles. If I do not select the case-sensitive option, I would change every instance of "us" to United States as well. Make sense now? thadius856_{talk|airports|neutrality} 19:14, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Make list from cat and all sub-cats

Is there a way to make a list from a category and all of its sub-categories, and the sub-categories of the sub-catgories, and so on (i.e. propagate all the way down the category tree)? I realize this would create a huge list for a category that is high up the tree, but it would be useful for tagging all articles under a low-level category with a WikiProject banner, for example. - Jwillbur 05:15, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Because the category isn't a true hierarchical system (not a tree) there is the possibility of infinite loops, where one category is a sub-category of the other and vice-versa. I'm not too sure whether this would cause a system failure or not, but it would be a major consideration as to whether the feature goes ahead or not. Developers? There is no such function at the moment. What you need to do is to apply systematics and go through the relevant branches of the category tree. Systematics is everything. Copy-paste the name of a category and build a list from its articles, then do the same with the next etc. Remember to save the list before you begin sorting out irrelevant entries. Then right-click the list of articles and select that all duplicate entries be removed. If you plan to tag talk pages for a WikiProject, you should also use the right-click function to remove all "non-article" entries. Finish off by converting everything to talk pages (right-click again). If you plan to do large chuncks of material, create one giant list of articles first and work on it from time to time. Remember to save the list everytime you've worked on it. I tried dividing the material for WP:HV into two lists and when I went through list no. 2, 80%+ of it turned out to be duplicates from the first. Multiple lists cannot be recommended. If a stub type is associated with your wikiproject, remember to check these categories as well. In my experience, 80% of the material will already be covered by any list you've made out of the category tree, but there is always a number of articles without proper categorization. Problem with Multiple wiki links alert function

There are two bugs in this function

1. When one has completed the last link which is duplicated, that name disappears from the list. Then when you click on the next link on the list, a message appears which reads "No more occurances". In the previous version this message appeared when clicking on the link which was last completed and which subsequently removed from the list. This is preferable because it confirms that no more duplicates exist. As it stands now, it seems that the program isn't finding any duplicates of the next name on the list, but if that is clicked again the first occurance of that link is highlighted.
   1. To expand on this. The bug is the AWB will search too the last occurance of a word so if i have 3 multilinks in the list Apple , Car and Boat and I hit apple first it will find the first apple link but if I hit car or boat next it will jump to the next occurance of apple and will continue to do so until its shown me every apple link . I hope i've made that clear (Gnevin 01:28, 26 January 2007 (UTC))
2. After finishing the complete list an error message occurs which reads: "Unhandled exception has occurred in your appliation. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error ..." etc. This error was not noticed in the previous version.

While on the subject of this Multiple links function a couple of enhancement seem to me:

1. Allow a user to remove a link from the alerts list if one chooses to leave duplicates (like when a link appears in an info box and somewhere else in the article). It is inconvenient to have a number of links which have already been reviewed when working with a long list.
2. Have the program propose a replacement for the link (ie. the text highlighted, but without the link brackets.) Permit the user to accept this proposal, or modify it, but have it stick until the occurances of that link have been reviewed. --JAXHERE | ^Talk 17:01, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Neither. Drag and drop isn't implemented. It's as simple as that. The edit window uses class System.Windows.Forms.TextBox from the the .Net Framework Class Library provided by Microsoft. If you want to have drag and drop implemented, specific reactions to some "events" (like DragEnter, DragDrop, DragLeave, etc) must be handled. Added Context Menu to the webBrowser Control, with just 'copy'. Allows you to copy text from the control now. Just need to sort out shortcut key.

I just started with AWB the other day, so please forgive me if this question is too obvious. Advanced search and replace questions

I started using AWB 2 days ago and am loving it, but there are several things I haven't been able to figure out.

1. Is there a way to search throughout all the archives of this talk page to see if my questions have already been answered?

I am searching for pages that contain the misspelling "saxaphone".

2. Is there a page somewhere that gives detailed help information and/or explanations of the use of the advanced search and replace functions? I'm looking for a definition of "subrule" an an explanation of the "if" tab.

Multiline / Singleline (regular expressions)?

3. In the Advanced Search and Replace ("Replace Special" window), what do the terms Multiline and Singleline mean? I checked m:MWiki-Browser - it refers to those terms, but does not explain them.

How to add [[ and ]] to a word but only when it's not there already

5. When I find "saxaphone" I want to change it to "[[saxophone]]". I tried doing this, but the problem is that some cases of "saxaphone" were already surrounded by double-brackets, so the result is [[[[saxophone]]]]. (In plain English, what I want to do is: replace "saxaphone" with "[[saxophone]]", unless "saxaphone" already has brackets around it, in which case replace it with "saxophone".)

I thought I could solve this by searching for [[saxaphone]] and replacing it with [[saxophone]] , but when I tried that as a Find string in Advanced Find and Replace, it was a disaster (finding every ocurrence of dobule-bracket in the article!) Is the slash ( / ) character the answer? If so, do I need to search for /[/[ ? Or do I need to set up a Subrule?

Perhaps this has already been fixed, but you could regex this to make it easier. [^\[]saxophone[^\]] would match any instance that doesn't have brackets before and after it. Here's a different approach which might work (I haven't rried it in this case but in a similar situation).

1. do a replace of "saxaphone" → "[[saxophone]]"
2. do another replace of "[[[[" → "[[""
3. and another of "]]]]" → "]]"

What you're effectively doing is allowing the 4 brackets to be put in then running a separate replace to remove them if they do happen to get put in. JAXHERE | ^Talk 15:00, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

AWB hangs on XP shutdown

I am generally someone who doesn't close all my programs before i turn off my pc .I just go to shut down and let windows close them ,now AWB always hangs when i do this and it doesn't even do like other programs and automatically end process after 10 seconds it just stops the entire shut down process till I click end now.

I think he means that when showing a diff when it's ready to save, AWB highlights the entire paragraph of the diff, and it would be better if it highlighted only the change (in the manner that FireFox does when searching a page). Interesting construction

A user complained that his clever construction which ([[construction ]]which ) works like that, is broken by AWB. Should AWB allow for it, or is it "too clever", so that it will be broken by other editors and should be changed to pipe syntax? Rich Farmbrough, 16:15 12 February 2007 (GMT).

Bug with category removal

I'm using AWB to remove some category from it.wiki. I used the command "Remove Category:" of the "More..." menu.
When there is no blank line between the category and the first interwiki, AWB remove the first interwiki too.--Moroboshi 23:15, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

I know that some people would like to have that kind of a tool. All features would not be needed and features could be taken out. Only people with strongly positive edits would be allowed to use. Save Changes to XML Dump File

Need to make edits/changes and save them back to the XML SQL dump file.

It is a problem with their wiki. You should write to them about that to remind them that in XHTML, all <img> tags must either end with a </img> tag directly following or the <img> tag must have a forward slash at the end (<img src="..." />). —METS501 (talk) 14:44, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, I signed up to see anyway, and it looks like that there's no reliable way to get the login status for those two wikis. Both of them don't pass the wgUserName variable, so there's no way of checking whether a user is logged in. Have any other suggestions? —METS501 (talk) 14:45, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Unless theres a way to get round the AWB login on each of them? Ie, if it is a custom wiki, therefore not following the AWB userlist, there is an option to override the logged in status...? I could, but I think that might have too much potential for abuse. It would allow people with dynamic IP's to edit forever without being blocked. 1. Change the text box for custom wiki to say a combo? And then have it save the multiple links on save settings - i noticed it will save 1, but multiple would be good, then load these for selection with AWB.
2. If there isnt a typo page on the custom wiki on Regextypofix enabling, offer to load from en.wiki? =)

Oh, just noticed another problem. When regextypofix is enabled and saved as default settings, on loading, the link is like http://www.hak5.org/wiki//wiki/Hak5:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos .... Some duplication i think? But it does correct typo's

New version help

Suggest you log in using I.E. and "remember me", then fire up AWB. (Also use your task manager to check AWB has actually closed down first.) Rich Farmbrough, 16:58 16 February 2007 (GMT).

Have cleared IE's cache, rebooted and then logged back into Wikipedia (with remember me) in IE. However, when I try to log in to AWB I just repeatedly get the following error message:

"You are not logged in. The logon Screen will now load, enter your name and password, click "Log In", wait for it to complete, then start the process again.

In future you can make sure this won't happen by logging into Wikipedia using Microsoft Internet Explorer

Find and Replace question

Hi. I don't know exactly how to explain my question in general terms, so I'll just say what I want to do: I'm trying to clean up usage of the <ref> element, for example when the ref is inside a sentence instead of outside the period, like this. To do that, I have to find any instance of "<ref name="####">########</ref>." and replace it with ".<ref name="####">########</ref>" while ignoring everything that I just represented above by a number sign.
