Filter a category

Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/User_manual#Tools shows a screen shot of the List Comparer. Try this:
  1. Choose Options > List Comparer.
  2. For List 1, use the options to make a list of articles.
  3. For List 2, use the options to make a list of articles in a specific category or using a specific template.
  4. Click the Compare button.
  5. Look at the results Unique in List 1, and click Use List.
  6. Close the list comparer and process your list.

Load settings associated with an account before logging in the account

Description At the program startup (assuming I haven't touched the default settings) en.wikipedia.org is the default site. This means that if my account is not AWB-enabled on en.wiki (which I don't need to be since I'm using AWB on a different Wikipedia site) and I go to "Files" → "Login/Profiles..." to log in my account with its associated settings (which include it.wiki as the site I intend to operate on), the login fails because the program first tries to log in my account on en.wiki and then loads the settings including the it.wiki preference, meaning I have to log in again before I can use AWB.
Now I know there are several ways to avoid this (i.e. making my settings the default ones – which I prefer not to because I use different settings files – so that they're automatically loaded at the startup, or even do the two things – loading the settings and logging in – separately), but I believe that simply letting the associated settings load before the account login would do no harm to AWB's functioning and simplify its use. --Adamanttt (talk) 14:24, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

This should not be done per MOS:LQ which states: "On Wikipedia, place all punctuation marks inside the quotation marks if they are part of the quoted material and outside if they are not. This practice is sometimes referred to as logical quotation. It is used here because it is deemed by Wikipedia consensus to be more in keeping with the principle of minimal change. This punctuation system does not require placing final periods and commas outside the quotation marks all the time, but rather maintaining their original positions in (or absence from) the quoted material." Ability to choose how many random pages you want to generate

I'm not sure exactly what you are requesting. If you really want AWB to skip straight past any article containing the {{dead link}} template, you can do that with the "Skip" tab. But I'd welcome an option to turn off the alert and red highlighting for dead links. It's common for an article to have, say, 31 dead links and an unmatched bracket, in which case the dead link highlighting gets in the way of finding the bracket. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:27, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Currently, I have been using AWB with the 'skip if no Alerts' option checked. I do want to see other kinds of Alerts, as I find that useful, but I do not want to see articles that have only deadlink Alerts. Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 12:45, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Accepting URLs to make list

Description In the older versions of AWB, it was possible to cut & paste a wikipage's URL into the new item entry line in the "Make list" dialog. It used to strip all the information except the article's name. Now, when trying to use URL, it just adds the full URL as an article's name, which of course doesn't do what's intended. Wanted pages listing

I found out that here at Wikipedia the Special:WantedPages has been disabled (I don't know why), but on other wikis such as the RuneScape Wiki, have wanted pages and is not disabled. When I tried to make a list in Special Pages, there was no such option, nor was there for Special:WantedFiles. This would be helpful for those non-wikipedia wikis. Finding a string in the edit box

Pretty output of typos.txt

Description In the output of typos.txt add a '*' at the beginning of each line so that the contents can be pasted to a wiki page in a readable way rather than this confusing display. Also adding a date and time stamp to the output would be nice, along with the sum of the times of all rules (something I find myself calculating manually quite a bit) . GenFix on: Stub goes above Cats!

I'm on cy (Welsh); when Genfix is on, it moves the stub template ("Eginyn") from the bottom to above the Cats. Please amend.

It shouldn't be being used like that. They should create their own banner template rather than adding it directly to talk pages. Make a list from a list

Description Add the ability to specify a file containing items, each of which AWB would apply a desired "make list" function to. For example, a user could create a file containing a list of misspelled words, then AWB would make a list by successively doing a Wiki search for each term in the file. You're right - there's no infobox or other human category to make it 100% clear that this article is about a person. But if AWB is confident enough to change "b." to "born", isn't that enough? Automatically comment out missing files

Description I feel that it is time to revisit the removal of missing files using AWB. It has been suggested at least once before. See Wikipedia_talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Feature_requests/Archive_8#Automaticlly_remove_missing_files. Given that there is currently 8500 articles and another staggering 30,000 odd pages with missing files there is no way the backlog will be cleaned up manually. In my opinion a page with a commented out file (and an appropriate note in the edit summary) is better than having a big ugly redlinked file in an article. Having the deleted files commented out and with an edit summary about the file name gives ample information for a subsequent editor to find a suitable replacement. I don't know how many of the deleted files are because they were moved or for incorrect inclusion criteria but if it mostly the latter it would support this proposal. If these redlinked files are left they are a target for vandalism - perhaps more so with the new file upload wizard. Finally, all the well maintained articles would have the files replaced with another which would mean that those remaining are of a lesser importance and presumable the deleted image is of low importance. -- Alan Liefting (talk - contribs) 05:03, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

Escape character in the replace expression

How about a new page, similar to WP:AWB/T but much smaller, containing rules that are to be treated as part of the general fixes? These would be controlled by the "general fixes" checkbox, not the "Enable RegexpTypofix" checkbox, and the changes would not be listed in the edit summary. The rules could then be developed independently of the core software.
Failing that, I would like the typo rule named " ," to be included in GoingBatty's request and re-implemented as a general fix. Using AWB on a private wiki protected by WinAuth

Description AWB can't work on a private wiki requiring authentication because SiteInfo can't get past the request for login and the custom wiki is rejected as incompatible (even though in fact the wiki in question is perfectly compatible). Once logged in it ought to work because IE will store the authentication details. In other words, we need to add authentication options for custom wiki on the prefs form and use them then we first query the site. I just wanted to follow this with a little more information. I was looking at the instructions and at the coding of these templates for the 4 main ones(News, Web, Book and Journal) and I noticed that the instructions are essentially crap. If you look at the coding of these 4 templates there are very few parameters that the others don't have. The instructions just may not say it. I was trying to edit on that page (see above) when AWB was stopped due to that the url youtu.be is blacklisted. I want AWB to change that link to the full original link with the full youtube.com string. That would make me, as a user, allowed to edit the page with the stuff that I edited with AWB. (Or if someone could chenge the blacklist, that would also work in this case). I hop you understand what I mean. I want to do as the typo program in AWB. I am not entirely clear on the context of what you are trying to do. But if you are correcting specific typos then use of the general find and replace function might be more appropriate. Remove sort for F&R box

Add an "undo". After destroying a few sets of F&R rules by misclicks, I learned to use the feature to my advantage. On large sets where the order of firing is important, I put sort keys at the beginning of the comment field of each statement (aa010, aa020, ... az340 etc) so that I can resort if the order gets whacked. It also make it easy to move groups of rules, by adjusting the sort keys and then sorting the comments. Adding an "undo" or adding a "Cancel" button in addition to "Clear" and "Done" would allow us to have the best of both worlds. Chris the speller yack 19:07, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

  • Please don't make it so easy to accidentally sort everything in Find & Replace! I have long, complicated sets of F&R which must be in a specific order. When I accidentally click on a column heading, it sorts all rows by that column. (These accidental clicks usually occur when I'm trying to resize columns.) I would be fine with disabling column sorting entirely, but I imagine some people could find it useful in certain circumstances. How about one of the following? A popup when a column heading is clicked, asking if you really want to sort all rows by those column values. Or provide a general option or a checkbox on the F&R page to enable/disable such sorting. A Cancel button would work well too. Three workarounds:

  1. Add numbers in the Comment section so you can always resort by this column
  2. If you misclick, exit AWB without saving your settings

Avoid stretching the diff area

Double-click shouldn't return diff window to top

Description When you double-click on a paragraph to undo a change in the diff window, the window goes back to the top after undoing. This can be quite inconvenient when undoing multiple paragraphs towards the bottom of a long page. Would it be possible to add an option to return to the old line in the diff window (or as close as possible) after you do a double-click undo? The fix which was implemented deals with the focus in the edit box rather than the requested diff window. I agree that the original request would be very useful, but I also realize that it's much more complicated since the double clicked paragraph probably won't be displayed, so it would have to find the closest paragraph which would be displayed. I made a duplicate request below. The clicked paragraph may or may not be displayed, depending on how many automated changes there are; but if not, focusing on the next (rather than previous) paragraph that is displayed would be a nice feature. That way one could go through the diffs one by one from top to bottom, eliminating those which aren't desired.

Note that if you click the 'diff' button to fix any manual changes (resolved request above), that also takes you back to the top of the diff page. Stop using non-breaking spaces between figures and unabbreviated units of measurement

Description WP:MOSNUM calls for non-breaking spaces "in expressions in which figures and abbreviations (or symbols) are separated by a space", but that does not mean they should be used with unabbreviated units of measurement, as it did to "Melton stands 5 foot and 3 inches", where it inserted a non-breaking space after the "3". Yes, it looks odd to me, too, but using a non-breaking space won't fix it, and it might be harder for an editor to notice it with a non-breaking space in it. If there were a consensus to always use a non-breaking space between figures and spelled-out units, I think WP:MOSNUM would say so. Avoiding breaks "in other places ... disruptive to the reader" seems to be giving freedom to editors to exercise good judgment, but I don't think AWB is to the point where we can say it has good judgment. When I said it looks odd, I meant the strange wording, with mixed plural and singular units of measurements, and with the word "and", instead of "Melton stands 5 feet, 3 inches". It wasn't clear to me (and still isn't) what looks odd to you, since the sentence (in the article on Nikki Taylor Melton) has no line break in it anyway, so a non-breaking space or lack of same is not detectable by the reader. Adding a non-breaking space will not help the issue with the strange wording, and AWB did not try to add a non-breaking space after the "5". There really is no good reason for using a non-breaking space between a value and a unit, any more than between a different pair of words. Breaking a line between "ten" and "feet" (or even "10" and "feet") is no worse than between "the" and "market" or "of" and "cattle". The situation where we have consensus is between values and unit symbols like "10&nbsp;ft" as it is agreed that starting a newline with symbols/abbreviations like "ft" does disturb the reader. An example of consensus use is the {{convert}} template, which only outputs &nbsp; where abbreviation is off. For reference, the MOS is clear about where we use non-breaking spaces, WP:NBSP#Use and MOS:NUM#Unit symbols.
May I remind editors of the ArbCom ruling that:
  • "Editors who collectively or individually make large numbers of similar edits, and who are apprised that those edits are controversial or disputed, are expected to attempt to resolve the dispute through discussion. It is inappropriate to use repetition or volume to present opponents with a fait accompli or to exhaust their ability to contest the change. This applies to many editors making a few edits each, as well as a few editors making many edits."
This feature of AWB does not enjoy consensus, and editors who continue to use AWB to make such changes after they become aware of the lack of consensus risk falling foul of an ArbCom ruling. Please remove this feature. --RexxS (talk) 17:50, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
I don't see how inserting a "non-breaking space" makes the copy harder to read, but I suspect Chris was really referring to the "&nbsp;" code for a non-breaking space. A "non-breaking space" is an html entity, "&nbsp;". This is the only way of inserting a "non-breaking space" into wikitext and having lots of them makes the copy harder to read, period. You may be confusing that with a nowrap style that stops a particular block of text from wrapping, which has absolutely no relevance to the issue here. Request to automatically replace ship names with ship-name templates

Status This feature is not going to be implemented
Description There are a number of templates for presenting the names of ships, such as Template:USS and Template:HMS. An ideal goal is to use these templates everywhere that a ship is identified with a certain presentation. For example, if there is a link to USS Enterprise (CVN-65), and the wikicode is [[USS Enterprise (CVN-65) |USS ''Enterprise'' (CVN-65)]], this should be replaced with {{USS|Enterprise|CVN-65}}, and if the wikicode is [[USS Enterprise (CVN-65) |USS ''Enterprise'']] (which excludes the ship number in the output), this should be replaced with {{USS|Enterprise|CVN-65|6}} (the last "6" being a field that excludes the number). There are five variations to each template, which change elements of the display (like not showing the "USS" or "HMS," or showing the ship number without the name). I think it would be an extremely useful idea to have an AWB feature to automatically make these replacements wherever the wikicode to be replaced comes up in articles. This would cover links to all articles in Category:Ships of the United States Navy where the article is in the format of "USS Shipname (No.)" (about 8000 articles) and all articles in Category:Ships of the Royal Navy where the article is in the format of "HMS Shipname (No.)" (about 4000 articles). Johnson, actually, it is very rare for a ship to be linked in an article as you propose, by the complete name of the ship, since the hull number (such as the CVN-65) in that link) is basically included as a disambiguator to distinguish the ship from other ships of the same name (in this case, others named Enterprise). CVN-65 is another name for the U.S. aircraft carrier Enterprise in much the same way that AgNO3 is another name for silver nitrate, in that you could say "Silver nitrate (AgNO3)" to distinguish it from other things called silver nitrate if there were different formulas with that name, but both individually refer to the same thing. If you look at articles like British Pacific Fleet and 1944 in aviation you will see that the routine presentation of ship names either avoids presenting the hull number (which is done by adding "6" to the last field in the template) or avoids presenting both the hull number and the "USS" or "HMS" portion (which is done by adding "2" to the last field in the template). Also, "[[USS Enterprise (CVN-65)]]" actually does not even produce the same output as "{{USS|Enterprise|CVN-65}}"; that output would be produced by "[[USS Enterprise (CVN-65)|USS ''Enterprise'' (CVN-65)]]," because ship names are properly italicized, and putting the ship name in the template adds the italics in the right place. I appreciate your experience. As you know, the template does more than just properly italicize ship names, it insures the consistent presentation of these names throughout Wikipedia in a variety of formats (for example, with or without the leading USS or HMS) - and of course allows for instant systemwide changes of the formatting. I agree that a bot could probably do a large share of this work, but there may also be cases which need a human eye to look over them to determine whether the most appropriate field is being used for each article linking to a ship name. Please note, AWB is not only used in en.wiki. A general fix like this will bring serious problems to users of AWB in other versions of wikipedia. I often use AWB for ship articles in de.wiki, where a template like {{USS}} does not exist, but links like [[USS Enterprise (CVN-65)|USS ''Enterprise'' (CVN-65)]] do. Add 'encoding="UTF-8"' to first line of settings xml file

From time to time, I use some external programs to manipulate my settings files. Some of these programs either do not specifically understand .xml files, or do not understand that they could be assumed to be in UTF-8 format. It would be helpful if the .xml file generated by AWB had the first line be:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>.

I was tempted to ask that the settings files include a byte order mark (BOM) as the first character in the file. The file starting with a BOM is commonly used in Windows as the method to indicate that the file is in UTF-8. However, the information at the byte order mark article implied that doing so may result in issues in other programs. I did not want to not cause problems for other possible uses of the files. It is my belief that changing the first line to <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> would result in few, if any, problems while alleviating some instances where the file is not understood to be in UTF-8 format. — Makyen (talk) 06:48, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

Description A simple idea really – all articles should have lead sections and many don't. There are a couple of situations when AWB should intervene, in my opinion. On any occasion when the article begins with a header (==Whatever==), then {{intro-missing}} should be added. If the article begins with a header that matches the article title exactly, then the header can just be removed. Potential stumbling blocks might be infoboxes and so forth. Musuem -> Museum typo fixing

Description There are at present over 1500 hits in the internal search engine for the word "musuem" which, other than in redirects and URIs, is always a typo for "museum". If AWB has the capability (I have no idea) checking occurrences in URIs would be good too (if the URI returns a 404 then check to see if the correct spelling works, if it does change it, if it doesn't mark as a dead link.) @Thryduulf: I only got 58 results for musuem in articlespace. There's already a typo rule to change "musuem" to "museum" in the article text, which I just used on many articles. Several articles include "musuem" in a valid URL. Roundhouse Railroad Museum and 10th Vermont Infantry are examples of articles that included a broken URL that I fixed by changing "musuem" to "museum", while Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art had a dead link that could not be fixed by changing "musuem" to "museum". My guess is that this would not be successful enough to be worth the time it would take for AWB to check dozens (or hundreds) of URLs in an article. GoingBatty (talk) 22:04, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

Automatic capitalization of sentences

Description When using the search and replace feature to remove a word from the head of a sentence (i.e. replace it with an empty text), the result is often a sentence which is not properly capitalized. I would love it if AWB knew how to automatically capitalize sentences following performing a word removal. This would save me a ton of manual work, as well as many errors. MOS:NBSP states that "A literal hard space, such as one of the Unicode non-breaking space characters, should not be used" In fixing the citation template "unknown parameter" errors, I found that a reasonable number of them were caused by the existence of a hard coded (0xA0) non-breaking space. In addition to removing them from citation parameter names I added a regular expression to change all occurences of character 0xA0 to &nbsp;. As a result, I have noticed that there are a surprising number of literal hard spaces in articles. Having these be indistinguishable while editing for most editors – not just in AWB – is bad. They should be changed to the HTML entity corresponding to the type of space that each is. This in compliance with MOS:NBSP and will allow editors to make informed choices as to when to use them.

I would also recommend that they be automatically replaced with a normal space (0x20) in locations where their use is invalid (e.g. template parameter names). — Makyen (talk) 09:46, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

I got the same feature request several times for my Auto-Formatter. I always refused to add this feature for several reasons. It's ok as a per-user rule but shouldn't be a default feature for all users. It's a purly cosmetic change with no benefit to the rendered article. It adds a lot of negligible changes to the diff view and makes it hard to read. It's dangerous - you never know if a star in front of a line really means it's a list. There are many exceptions. It's debutable - some user want their wikitext to be condensed. I also suggest to not implement this. --TMg 12:23, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

Description The Filter (to filter the List) today has "Content" and "Talk" paired. (I refer to the top-left two check boxes; they have the effect: on-click-marks-all-in-the-column). The first of the list is named "content" (also). I suggest that the top name be changed into Subject (as opposed to "Talk") the generic name. The second one be renamed into "main/article" (or one of these), as these are the names used for mainspace. I learned that {{SUBJECTSPACE}} is the one and only non-ambiguous reference. Infobox cleanup (edit window only)

Description I remember that this issue was raised several months ago—though I'm not sure whether it was on this page—and there seemed to be support for the idea, but I can't seem to find the original discussion right now. Could AWB be used to clean up the appearance of infoboxes in the edit window. There are a number of things that could be done, from making parameter values readily identifiable by standardizing spacing so that all equal signs are in a straight vertical line (see Example 1) to clearly distinguishing between different parameters (see Example 2).

AFAIK there is no consensus for adding whitespace. In fact I personally am removing it because it adds extra space to articles and makes no good. I know I come to this a bit late, but I do have thoughts on it. Specifically, I like the two proposals as they stand, but I also appreciate that not all editors do. I would go further and say that I personally like indenting the pipes on each new line just by one space for visual ease, and also the same new-line/indented/aligned style when doing cite templates, as there are many possible parameters. However, I do see the point of view of those who prefer things to be in-line. I rather like the idea of something like that. IMO, example 2 should be enabled by default, and then whitespace one can be enabled on a per-editor basis (certainly not a general fix, but this would fit in the assisted editing). Allow the refresh of Rename template parameters

Status Feature already exists in AWB
Description When you select "Refresh status/typos", AWB refreshes the typo list and User talk templates, Template redirects, and Dated templates. Would it be possible to also refresh Rename template parameters? The workaround now is to save your settings and page list, exit the program, and start the program again. Thanks! Auto correct Pseudo-Headings

Status This feature is not going to be implemented
Description It is only an idea I had after making this post on the discussion page (I do not use AWB and so I do not know whether there is already such a feature): Sometimes code like ;Title or '''Title''' are used as Pseudo-Headings. From Wikipedia:Accessibility:

Do not make pseudo-headings using bold or semicolon markup. Screen readers and other machines can only use correctly formatted headings...

Can AWB be used to detect and correct pseudo headings? For example ;... without any following :... (i.e. a definition list with a definition term but without a definition) is a good indicator for a pseudo heading. Greetings, Stephan Kulla (talk) 00:46, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

The problem is that replacing a misused ;Heading with '''Heading''' doesn't really make things better. It's still of no value in terms of semantics. I think this needs a user to decide if, for example, a : is missing in the next line. --TMg 12:33, 11 May 2014 (UTC)

No autoreplace for "life long"

Status This feature is not going to be implemented
Description Twice now, this bot has led editors to replace "life long" with "lifelong" (in the article The Seasons (Haydn)). This should not be an auto-replace because in some instances "life long" is actually correct (here "his whole life long", just like, for example, "the whole summer long"). Thanks for fixing this. @Opus33: Typo fixes are not done by bots, but by human editors who should review their edits before saving. To avoid the issue, I changed the article from "his whole life long" to "his entire life". GoingBatty (talk) 22:40, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

New Tab and improvements for Admin functions

Status This feature is partially implemented
Description I would like to suggest a couple improvements to the application targetting the work done by admins. Since I see it has been done before I am going to submit them as a group but please let me know if you would rather I submit them individually.
General
  1. Create a new tab for Admin like the one for Bots
  2. Move the admin functionality to the new tab from the Start tab (Protect, Delete, Move)
  3. Add Block, Unblock, Unprotect and if possible the ability to undelete an article.
  4.  Partly done Allow the admin functionality (such as delete, block and protect) to be used by bots.
Delete specific
  1. Modify the list of deletion summaries on the delete drop down to only display for Wikipedia.
    1. For non Wikipedia (like for Wikia) default it to the collection of summaries available in the Default summary prompt on the Start tab (but it needs to be editable.
Protect specific
  1. Under the protect function can we change the Expiry to a date selection rather than freeform text. The needed format is currently not very clear since its freeform text.
  2. If 1 isn't possible can the protect functionality be modified to include the drop down of selections in the protection function (1 hour, 1 day, 1week, etc.). Otherwise can it at least include the ability for hourly protections? Currently articles can only be protected in whole day imcrements with AWB.
  3.  Done Can the Protect function summary be updated to include the 4 reasons in the drop down? (Excessive vandalism, High traffic page, Excessive spamming, Counter-productive edit warring and Other)
  4. Recommend the terms be changed to reflect Unprotect, Semi-protect and Fully-protect rather than the existing terminology of Unprotected, Semi-protected and Fully-protected. If we are protecting something the wording looks strange.
Move specific
  1.  Done Under the Move function I recommend updating the list of summaries to reflect the summaries at Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#C2. Renaming or merging similar to how its done for deletions.
    1. For non wikipedia default it to the collection of summaries available in the Default summary prompt on the Start tab.
