Moving archived talks

[edit]

When updating the archive locations for bots like ClueBot or sigmabot upon a move, can the old archived pages be automatically renamed from their old headers somehow? For example, when the Kyiv article was renamed - a user manually renamed each archive page. Another user even reverted some renames with justification that it broke the bot.

This seems like it is not future proofed. Tule-hog (talk) 20:05, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Tule-hog: If the user carrying out the move has the page mover right, they have the option to move the subpages at the same time as the primary move.
Without knowing what Place Clichy (talk · contribs) meant by "it breaks the structure of the archive pages", I can't comment on the last point, other than to say that a bot wasn't mentioned but a structure. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:31, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks; going forward, I will submit move requests for articles with numerous archive subpages via WP:RMT to make sure they go properly. Tule-hog (talk) 21:43, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Redrose64 and Tule-hog: honestly I don't really remember, but I believe that my comment was a reference to the links in the archive boxes at the top of Talk:Kyiv and each archive page. IIRC I objected to a move where the mover did not fix the incoming links to the page. I strongly suggest, when moving such a page, that you check all incoming links (incl. talk pages) and fix them, knowing that some of them may be automated. @Place Clichy: That should not be necessary. Page moves leave a redirect behind, and this ensures that inward links will continue to work. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:01, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but that doesn't work when these links are generated automatically using the current page title, as can be the case for archive boxes. All I'm suggesting is a check. Place Clichy (talk) 02:35, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If the subpages (whether archive or not) are moved along with the primary page, the {{archive}} at the top of each archive subpage will take care of itself. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 07:39, 4 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
