Memory, Truth & Reconciliation in the Developing World
One major method for reconciling post-conflict societies to the traumatic memories of conflict in recent years has been the “truth commission.” This course surveys truth and reconciliation commissions in Southeast Asia, South Africa and Latin America, and the ways in which they are used to construct alternative national narratives in the search for usable pasts. Comparisons will be drawn where appropriate with truth commissions and their uses of memory in other regions.
Your choice of what to write about for your Wikipedia article should be made in consultation with the instructor. A list of potential commissions is below. You should select a new article to write; a stub to turn into an article; or a short article to improve. You may not select a full-length article for this assignment, although as with all Wikipedia content the full-length articles (eg South Africa) can be edited by any user.
