This course surveys the economic, political, social, and environmental history of the trans-Mississippi West. Beginning with initial European conquest of the region, we will explore the history of the western frontier as a zone of contact, conflict, and accommodation between Euro-Americans, Indians, Mexicans, and Asian and African-American migrants. In the 20th century, the course will examine the rise of the modern urban West and its role in a global capitalist economy and the impact of these developments on the region's natural and social environments. Along the way, we will also consider the changing role of the West in the American popular imagination. As an advanced elective, the course requires a major writing component, including a series of writing assignments related to Wikipedia.Docjay57 (talk) 17:15, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
