From the course catalog: "The way knowledge is acquired in different disciplines, cultures, and times. The course compares the acquisition of knowledge in the social sciences, the humanities, and the natural sciences. Emphasis is on understanding, analyzing, discussing, and evaluating methods of learning used by prominent writers in various disciplines and on applying such methods to one’s own experience."
Our specific focus will be how knowledge is affected when it becomes digital and networked. Class topics include crowdsourcing, online privacy, censorship, FERPA, HTML, and Wikipedia. That is, we are actively discussing Wikipedia as a phenomenon, not merely using it to express discipline-specific knowledge. We are reading Joseph Reagle's Good Faith Collaboration as a textbook, alongside George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four" and Franz Kafka's "The Trial".
The final project will be improving the quality of Wikipedia articles about our local area, including Chesapeake College, Wye Mills, Maryland, and possibly other pertinent articles to be decided upon by the students.
