  • Complete the online training for students.
  • Create a user page, and sign up on the list of students on the course page.
  • To practice editing and communicating on Wikipedia, introduce yourself to any Wikipedians helping your class (such as a Wikipedia Ambassador), and leave a message for a classmate on their user talk page.
Milestone
  • All students have Wikipedia user accounts and are listed on the course page.

Choosing articles

  • Select an article for to work on. Add your article to the class’s course page.
  • Compile a bibliography of relevant research and post it to the talk page of the article you are working on. Begin reading the sources.

Milestone

  • All students have started editing articles on Wikipedia.

Comparing Wikipedia to another reference source

Assignment (due Nov. 7)

Compare and contrast a Wikipedia article with an article on the same topic in another encyclopedia. Use the list below to help you think about how to frame your analysis. At the end of your essay, assess how you would use each source in a research project on that particular topic. All encyclopedias, except Wikipedia, are available from the Case-Geyer Library.

  • The structure of the article
  • The kinds of information it contains
  • The information and sources to which it links
  • The style and tone of the writing
  • Illustrations
  • References
  • List of suggested readings

Critique and Editing Plan

Assignment (due on Moodle Nov. 21)
  • In a single 5-7 page Word document, identify your team’s chosen article, describe its strengths and weaknesses, and describe of your team’s research and editing plan. What will you add or change and why? How will you divide the work among team members? How do you envision the final edits? Make sure all team members names are on the document.
