This course is intended to provide students with a deeper understanding of the position of women in Islam through an examination of the teachings of the Qur'an, looking at both traditional interpretation and the contemporary reinterpretation. The primary texts for the course will be the Qur'an and current writings by Muslim women.

The primary objective of this course is to acquaint students with various issues related to women in the family and society, and with a variety of both traditional and modern Muslim works on these issues. The readings will serve as a basis for class discussions designed to encourage students to read these challenging works with comprehension and critical discernment. Along with the readings and lectures in this course, we will spend a considerable amount of time in class devoted to the close reading of Qur’anic texts related to issues of gender to anchor our study and discussions.
