Description: This course will focus on concepts and skills needed to conduct information research. Emphasizing the use of electronic information source, the course will prepare students to find quality information. Critical evaluation of sources will be stressed throughout the course. Specific topics include citing and academic integrity. Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to make use of resources to find and evaluate information for college-level research, personal interest or decision-making. Course may contain a service-learning component.

Course Outcomes: By the end of this course, you will:

  • Determine the nature and extent of the information needed.
  • Evaluate information and its sources critically.
  • Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose.
  • Access and use information ethically and legally.
  • Access needed information effectively and efficiently.
  • Describe the importance of information skills to school and work performance.

Project: In the Wikipedia Improvement Source & Summary Project (WISSP), students will develop effective search methods, critically evaluate resources and share information ethically and legally in the context of expanding Wikipedia articles.
