The DYK section featured on the main page is always looking for interesting new and recently expanded stubs from different parts of the world. Please make a suggestion.--Peta 02:00, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An excellent historic resource

[edit]

I've mentioned the Scottish and the Welsh ones before; now it's England's turn.

british-history.ac.uk have just put Samuel Lewis' 1848 A topographical dictionary of England online. Entries vary from a sentence or three on most villages to lengthy discussions of cities and their constituent institutions. Definitely worth digging through to flesh out local articles... Shimgray | talk | 19:11, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One caveat about this undeniably excellent resource: Lewis's placename etymologies should be avoided. It's not that they're all wrong, but his work pre-dates the serious study of English place names and in particular many of the primary historical sources for placename history had not yet been published, so his info is based on a fraction of the information now available. This means they are simply not reliable, and are entirely superseded by the etymologies in the present-day place name dictionaries. --Pfold (talk) 13:02, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dispute regarding treaties relevant to the formation of the United Kingdom

[edit]

There is currently a dispute going on at the Template talk:UKFormation which regard the inclusion of treaties specific to England within the template which aims to display the treaties leading to the formation of the United Kingdom i.e. the Union of Parliaments and Union of Crowns before that. Comment upon the dispute is needed so that a consensus may be reached. siarach 04:14, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for a London Admin?

[edit]

User:Jeffrey Newman (real name - living NW London). I visited Wikipedia for a while in 2005, want to return but cannot log-in. For discussion see:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Jimbo_Wales where Gadfium suggests I contact someone in UK and then find a Developer to regain my identity. Can anyone here help? 85.210.255.81 05:30, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A guideline is being drafted at this page which would prescribe that all UK nationals be described as British, rather than English, Welsh, Scottish or N. Irish. Unfortunately the proposer appears to have overlooked notifying the UK based projects. Leithp 07:56, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An Invitation from the Philippine Wikipedia Community

[edit]

Hello folks,

The Philippine Wikipedia Community will be holding its 1st Meet-up in Cebu City (the fourth one in the Philippines) on June 23-24, 2008. This coincides with the first Philippine Open Source Summit, also to be held in Cebu. The Philippine Wikipedia Community is an Implementing Partner of the Open Source Summit. We invite you to join us in this event. If you are in the IT or IT-enabled services industry, this would be a great opportunity to meet people from the 4th best outsourcing city in the world. This is also a good excuse to visit our beautiful beaches :)

If you're interested in joining the Wikipedia meet-up, please join our discussion. You can register for the Open Source Summit here. If you would like some assistance with local accomodations, you may email User:Bentong Isles.

Preliminary Announcement: Wolfe's WikiWeek

[edit]

Instead of a regular holiday this year, it's my plan to buy a 7-day All Line Rover ticket and travel around Great Britain by train. Why am I telling you this? Well, I'll be taking a digital camera with me and I intend to take as many photographs as possible that can be used on Wikipedia (mostly railway-related). I'm going to try and get what I can from Category:UK rail transport articles needing images, and I'm also inviting requests and suggestions.

Wikimania 2010 Oxford bid

[edit]

This is a general call for any wikimedians in the UK who would be interested in getting involved with and extremely active venture to finally bring Wikimania to the UK. To join the team simply sign your name here. It would be good to join the Wikimedia UK mailing list, view the mailing list archives or to join the irc channel at irc:wikimania-oxford. Information on how to access IRC can be found here. We really are pulling out all the stops this year and any help we could get would be most appreciated. All the information about the Oxford bid can be found at meta wiki here. I and the others in the team look forward to working with you. Seddσn talk Editor Review 23:16, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Date format poll confirmation

[edit]

There is ongoing discussion on the talk page for the Manual of Style (including a series of polls) aimed at achieving consensus on presenting dates in American (November 5, 1605) or International (5 November 1605) format on an article by article basis. The poll gives full instructions, but briefly the choices are:

  • C = Option C, the winner of the initial poll and run-off. (US articles have US format dates, international format otherwise)
  • R = Retain existing wording. (National format for English-speaking countries, no guidance otherwise).

If you wish to participate or review the progress of discussion, you may follow this link. --Pete (talk) 06:21, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GDP (not GVA) figures needed for England & regions

[edit]

If anyone is aware of GDP figures for England provided by the Office for National Statistics, or a similar source, could they be added to the England article's infobox? The "Economy" section quotes a GDP per capita figure, but the ONS page linked to (currently at note 130) does not contain this and the route from there to the data wasn't obvious enough for me to find it. Economy of England#Regional variation gives per capita GDP figures in Euro, which suggests that the data was sourced from Eurostat. It would seem more logical to replace this with ONS data in Sterling which should be available, in a more up to date form, in the same place as a figure for England, wherever that is.
