James Park Woods (4 January 1886 – 18 January 1963) was an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest combat award bestowed on members of the Australian armed forces at the time. He enlisted in September 1916, and joined his unit, the 48th Battalion, in France in September 1917. When it was suspected that flanking British troops in another battalion had not gone forward to their objective as reported, Woods and three others were sent to make contact. They encountered a strong German post instead and, after calling for reinforcements, drove more than thirty Germans from the position, then defended the captured post. Woods returned to Western Australia after the war, operating a vineyard and orchard. (Full article...)
