Military[edit]

Some one fancty creating an HM Calpe article - the source is here Victuallers (talk) 12:15, 18 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pah - started it myself! Victuallers (talk) 15:58, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Visiting Gib[edit]

I'm going to be visiting Gib on 6-7 October with camera and notebook in hand. :-) If anyone would like to meet up for a chat please do let me know - I've worked on and off on History of Gibraltar, most of which I wrote, and am aiming to get it finished soon and hopefully get it up to GA or FA standard. Prioryman (talk) 23:44, 20 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's great, I look forward to meeting you! You have an impressive GA and FA track record - it would be great to see some Gibraltarpedia articles add to the list. Where are you from, if you don't mind me asking? --Gibmetal 77talk 2 me 15:07, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh Yes "Guisborough Helmet" during National Helmet Week! Brilliant. If I can then I'll try and be there Victuallers (talk) 15:57, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

where is this project exactly?[edit]

I clicked on the link to what appeared to be a separate URL for this project and wound up redirected here. I don't get it. Does this project exist only on en.wp or is there a dedicated site for it? The reason I ask is that both User:Marianne Terese Olenius and I are finding a bit confusing. Some input from someone more intimately involved with this project would be helpful. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:58, 16 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know the URL (www.gibraltarpedia.org) was only ever meant to be a redirect to this page. It's not a separate website; it's very much part of en.wp. I presume the idea was that www.gibraltarpedia.org would be a much more user-friendly link than en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/GibraltarpediA (and it doesn't take up so much space on leaflets and other printed media!). Prioryman (talk) 17:02, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I am much more concerned with where this lost newbie should be posting their work as it seems they have gotten some confusing advice on the subject and I can't sort it out either. Where it is now is obviously not correct but I don't know where it should be instead. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:03, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What is the work you want to post? Maybe I can help if you let me know where and what it is. Prioryman (talk) 17:05, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's not me, see discussion at User talk:Marianne Terese Olenius for details. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:28, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll see if I can help that editor. Prioryman (talk) 17:41, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thought it was supposed to be multi-lingual? Rich Farmbrough, 15:40, 22 September 2012 (UTC).[reply]

Contributors[edit]

Have all the contributors to this project been notified that someone was being paid for their work? --KlickitatGlacier (talk) 19:11, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nobody was "being paid for their work". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:31, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"...Roger and John are being paid as consultants by the Government of Gibraltar to help deliver this project...".
Shouldn't it have been made clear to all the volunteers on this project that the people directing their efforts were paid PR consultants? --KlickitatGlacier (talk) 21:00, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, Wikipediocracy sock editor, because they're not PR consultants. Prioryman (talk) 21:10, 21 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
They certainly pass the duck test. [1] [2]. Also, Prioryman, I wouldn't be so quick to scoff at Wikipediocracy, with WMUK members themselves actually holding your organization in disgust.
I don't think one individual's hysterics are typical of the rest of the membership. People over there are being remarkably patient. If it was me, I'd just tell him to fuck off and grow a brain; WMUK would be better off without him. Prioryman (talk) 02:00, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, the beauties of groupthink. How DARE anyone not see things your way! Get the banhammer, NOW! --KlickitatGlacier (talk) 06:33, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
One more thing Prioryman, did you ever get around to explaining who's funding your upcoming trip to Gibraltiar? --KlickitatGlacier (talk) 01:44, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Why don't we trade information - you tell me what your previous account name was and which user you are on Wikipediocracy, and I'll tell you who's funding my trip to Gibraltar. Prioryman (talk) 02:00, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Why, Prioryman? I'm not receiving expensive gifts that one might construe as causing a COI, and therefore have nothing to declare. --KlickitatGlacier (talk) 02:15, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How about you both drop it, or at least take it outside. WP:SPI is thataway. WP:COIN is the other. Beeblebrox (talk) 23:05, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bristol Hotel[edit]

Hi, can somebody in Gibraltar please photograph Bristol Hotel, Gibraltar in daylight and also try to enter its lobby and restaurant or whatever and take some photos. Badly needs photographs.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:44, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gibraltar template[edit]

I am surprised so few of the articles created on Gibraltar over the past few months have been added to the main Gibraltar template. With page views averaging over 130,000 per month, the Gibraltar page, which also displays the template, is obviously the starting point for most people and I would suggest it is therefore important to develop the basic template. It would be rather a pity if some of those great new articles were rarely accessed simply because people couldn't find them easily enough. I realize other templates have been introduced or expanded (see especially Template:Buildings and structures in Gibraltar) but this can only be seen when one of the pertinent articles is displayed. In order to avoid clutter, it may be advisable to include templates such as this as an item in the main template (see for example the templates on the Rome page) while creating new templates for other areas of interest (e.g environment). Another option would be to develop more top-down articles on the various areas. There could, for example, be articles on topics such as Architecture of Gibraltar (covering most of the important buildings) or Religion in Gibraltar, which could then be included in the main template. It might also be useful to look at some of the other templates used in connection with historical cities. The one on Edinburgh seems to be quite well done. Perhaps there are other ideas on how to go forward with this? --Ipigott (talk) 10:13, 30 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for belated reply ... do be Bold. The Edinburgh one looks very good. Victuallers (talk) 12:04, 29 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Smoking ban[edit]

Gibraltar has implemented a smoking ban in public places as from 1 October 2012. Anyone fancy starting smoking in Gibraltar or smoking ban in Gibraltar? See similar articles here:

--Gibmetal 77talk 2 me 22:02, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We can still smoke in here, right? Beeblebrox (talk) 22:37, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Started this. Please help improve by finding reliable sources about the roads and photographs.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:42, 7 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gibralar Day in London[edit]

The annual Gibraltar Day was held in London last week. Anyone fancy starting the article? --Gibmetal 77talk 2 me 10:43, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

List of resources[edit]

I've added two very useful sources to this list. One is the 2005 comprehensive report on the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and the other the Gibraltar Development Plan which includes Government's policy on various historical and otherwise sensitive sites within the old town and Gibraltar as a whole. --Gibmetal 77talk 2 me 10:49, 21 October 2012 (UTC) Thanks Ty Victuallers (talk) 11:16, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Google Maps Street View[edit]

Just in case anyone is interested Google has now made their Street View available on most of Gibraltar's main roads. Check it out... --Gibmetal 77talk 2 me 22:17, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that Tyson - I will! Victuallers (talk) 22:27, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed amendment to GibraltarpediA DYK restrictions[edit]

I have proposed an amendment to the wording of the restrictions on GibraltarpediA articles on DYK. For details, please see Wikipedia talk:Did you know#Proposed minor wording change to Gibraltarpedia restrictions. Prioryman (talk) 08:36, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Large water reservoirs carved inside the Rock of Gibraltar.

I was just checking out AquaGib's new website and they've include a fairly comprehensive history of water supply in Gibraltar if anyone is interested in using this as a resource to start this article and expand on what's already available at Nun's Well, Gibraltar... It's an interesting topic as you may know natural fresh water supplies are extremely limited on The Rock! --Gibmetal 77talk 2 me 12:58, 4 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Looks promising. Coincidentally, I've been coming across plenty of info about sanitation in the course of finishing the History of Gibraltar article, so there seems to be plenty of source material. I wonder if we can get them to donate any photos? Prioryman (talk) 21:12, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's great. I can take a photo of the old fountain which used to be connected to the aqueduct and also of the only surviving vent. We already have some pics of Nun's Well and of the water reservoirs inside The Rock but maybe we can get them to donate some of the harder to get to places (desalination plant, etc.). John, Roger, can you help? --Gibmetal 77talk 2 me 21:46, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
How about I get someone to write half of the article so that yu only have to add a bit..... Stewart has written this. Oh and did you notice that we now have over 700 articles. Victuallers (talk) 22:25, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That'll be great, thanks. But I meant in asking AquaGib to donate pics? --Gibmetal 77talk 2 me 22:54, 5 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

AquaGib started, needs expansion.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 21:03, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Caves[edit]

Hello all. I've started a bunch of short stubs on caves which are shown on a diagram. No doubts the articles will be added to the cave template but it would be great if there are any experts on caves interested to help expand my stubs into something worthwhile. I saw my initial stubs were expanded so I thought it might be productive to start quite a few to allow expansion. I'd be grateful if you could notify the Gibraltar Caving Unit about this.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 19:40, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just a thought, but how about instead of creating stubs, create a single Caves in Gibraltar article combining them? If there is enough material to expand sections on individual caves they can be spun off, but right now I think having the parent article would be more useful. Prioryman (talk) 21:27, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There's List of caves in Gibraltar which could be developed into a tabled list. My feeling it that if the rather useless stubs can't be expanded as intended they should be redirected. They can always be deleted anyway if they can't be expanded, I thought it worth giving a go to see what would be expanded. But I think the best thing really would be to start with a tabled list and split when necessary.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 21:36, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I didn't know that list existed. What a lot of caves! It's no wonder the old name Calpe means "hollow"... Prioryman (talk) 21:39, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, that comes from it being a rock I guess! Really not sure most of the ones I started are notable in terms of material existing as of yet for them, I'd imagine that the underground Gibraltar website has people which will gradually get information out there. Anyway, feel free anybody to redirect my stubs into a list.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 21:55, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Gibraltar Challenge was recently brought up at WP:COIN and I have several concerns about such a competition harming WP and possibly putting the WMF in a questionable legal situation. I have started a discussion here and invite you to participate. OlYeller21Talktome 20:19, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Just to update the message above - that debate closed with quite a few apologies! Victuallers (talk) 10:16, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's a bit sunny of you. The WMF asked the organization to make sure that it doesn't associate it's competitions and to seek legal counsel when having competitions in the future. You may have also broken some laws but hey, if you to frame as ending with an apology, go for it. OlYeller21Talktome 00:15, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On a side note, I won't be back for replies. If you'd like to chat with me, you can reach me on my talk page. Good luck to your organization in the future and keep up the good work! OlYeller21Talktome 00:16, 29 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Results[edit]

Seeing what we have achieved. Look here Compare this with the picture on the project page and see what we have achieved. Dozens of articles all the way around the bay of Gibraltar and around the coast to Tarifa. All these are in English but click the option box and you will see a similar increase for other languages. Well done. Victuallers (talk) 10:16, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Business Heritage[edit]

This is a pretty neat documentary series on some of the oldest family businesses in Gibraltar which continue to this day. Thought it may interest some of you...

I'm currently working on Sacarello's, coffee merchants Est. 1888 which features in episode one. Episode two features the Bland Group (this article could do with some work). Both episodes are available to watch online on the GBC Player. I believe next week's episode will be on Lewis Stagnetto (wine merchants). --Gibmetal 77talk 2 me 23:09, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Short of photos - Upper Rock[edit]

Commons has plenty of photographs from around the town, but of the Upper Rock and the batteries, very few (for some of the batteries on the Upper Rock we have some tiny thumbnails, and only in PNG format, as here and here but nothing useful).

I am off-Rock for the forseeable future. If anyone has a camera and fancies hoofing it up to the top to supply a gallery of photos, that would be helpful for the project.
