Citation URLs[edit]

(video) Why do we need to use different links (instead of the standard citation links)? czar 21:05, 1 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It was a request from Gale as part of the discussion around the partnership - they set up that system for use by the TWL accounts during the pilot phase (might change later). Nikkimaria (talk) 22:11, 1 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Is this still valid? Bogger (talk) 10:03, 18 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Biography In Context collection just added![edit]

Gale have added Biography In Context, a database of biographical entries on more than 400,000 people! Editors with Gale accounts should already be able to access this database. Sam Walton (talk) 19:42, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have access to gale through my library[edit]

Can I still use the userbox? Dlohcierekim 02:01, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I stand corrected, but I don't think so: the userbox says "...through The Wikipedia Library"; you're accessing Gale through you own library. —Bruce1eetalk 06:22, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Dlohcierekim: You can use the syntax {{Wikipedia:Gale/Userbox|twl=no}} to remove the "through TWL" part :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 08:28, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Samwalton9 (WMF): Thanks for that – I should have looked at Wikipedia:Gale/Userbox where it spells it out quite clearly! —Bruce1eetalk 10:03, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. I use Gale to help w/ AfD and AfC. No longer have Biographies in context, though. Dlohcierekim 13:22, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Samwalton9 (WMF): I really miss Biographies in Context, but I don't want to take a slot that is needed by someone who needs it more than I. Dlohcierekim 14:48, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Dlohcierekim: We've just upgraded to 100 available accounts, so do feel free if you'd use it. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 23:15, 8 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Brampton Guardian date range?[edit]

Hi! Could someone look up when the Brampton Guardian starts? I've found a spreadsheet suggesting that it starts in February 2008. (I'm hoping it starts much earlier.) -- Zanimum (talk) 22:15, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Zanimum: Do you know which Gale database Brampton Guardian is a part of? I'm struggling to find it right now. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 11:42, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Samwalton9: Sorry, not sure. It's a community newspaper from Ontario, Canada. It's referenced here: http://www.gale.com/tlist/it_news.xls. -- Zanimum (talk) 19:56, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Zanimum: Ah yes, thanks. Seems as though I was looking at an old version of the title list. Unfortunately, yes, it appears Gale's coverage of this newspaper only begins in 2008. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 08:54, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Samwalton9: Thanks! I believe that's the range on their website. I'll keep this database in mind if the paper itself folds. Thank you for your help! -- Zanimum (talk) 18:42, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

GVRL access includes Shakespearean Criticism?[edit]

Anyone know if the "select" GVRL content includes their "Shakespearean Criticism" series? I ran across a cite that needed verifying in volume 5 of the series and discovered that Gale has been publishing this series for going on 200 yearly volumes, compiling and reprinting critical takes on Shakespeare in the last year. A treasure trove for work on WikiProject Shakespeare's articles, but I wouldn't want to take up a Gale slot if the series isn't even included. Anybody know or can check? --Xover (talk) 20:18, 22 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Xover: The selection contains only the content published directly by Gale, not those published by third-parties. It contains "Shakespeare for Students 2nd ed." but the list I have doesn't contain 'Shakespearean Criticism', though it does appear to be published by Gale. I'll ask for clarification. Gale access not working[edit]

I'm not sure where to ask this, but the password I was given in May 2017 to access Gale no longer works. Has my subscription expired after only 7 months? Do I need to reapply at the Wikipedia Library Card Platform? Thanks —Bruce1eetalk 08:43, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Bruce1ee: It may be the case that accounts expired at the end of the year. Looking into it! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:33, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! —Bruce1eetalk 12:37, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Bruce1ee: Could you try again? Apparently there was a server issue that may have been causing your login not to work. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 13:26, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Samwalton9 (WMF): Yes, it's working again. Thanks for your help. —Bruce1eetalk 13:37, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with Gale?[edit]

Does anyone know if there's a problem with Gale? It won't accept the password I was given. It's possible my subscription has expired, but there is no renew button for Gale under my user at wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org, only this message: "Renewals are either not required, not available right now, or you have already requested a renewal." Yet there is no waitlist for Gale, accounts are available. —Bruce1eetalk 06:58, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ditto. --Xover (talk) 08:42, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Me too. The same thing happened last New Year, see the thread above. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:19, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes, the account(s) may have expired at the end of the year. We're chatting to Gale next week and I'll make sure we get this renewed, sorry for the downtime :) Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 12:06, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help. —Bruce1eetalk 12:42, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Bruce1ee, Xover, and Struway2: Your accounts should now be up and running again, with the addition of the Times Digital Archive (full announcement to come)! Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 19:31, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Samwalton9 (WMF): It is indeed! Thanks, Struway2 (talk) 19:44, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Samwalton9 (WMF): It's working again. Thank you for your help. —Bruce1eetalk 20:32, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Financial Times?[edit]

According to https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/55/, this should provide access to Gale's "Infotrac Newsstand" package, and according to Gale's title list for this database (available in different formats from here), Infotrac Newsstand provides access to the Financial Times (full-text start date 01/1999, 30 days embargo). However, when I use my WP:LIBRARY access to Gale and go to the Infotrac Newsstand database, I can't even select this publication. It doesn't seem to be included there at all. Is our Wikipedia access limited to parts of the database, or is there something not quite working on Gale's end? Or could it be that this particular newspaper is only available to users from particular countries? (The title list notes that "select titles may have different coverage based on the market your library serves".) Does anyone know more about this? Best, — Pajz (talk) 21:42, 5 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gale access not working[edit]

My Gale access is no longer working. I suspect that my subscription has expired, but there is no renew button for Gale under my user at wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org. The same thing happened last year (see my post here), and Sam kindly helped me. Thanks. —Bruce1eetalk 05:53, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Me too. As per the past two years. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:09, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
My access is also not working and it has not yet run for a full year? Kosack (talk) 18:49, 3 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Just acknowledging that I've seen this and will look into it this week - it's likely that accounts lapsed at the end of the year. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 09:38, 6 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Bruce1ee, Struway2, and Kosack: Now working. Nikkimaria (talk) 02:50, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Nikkimaria and Samwalton9 (WMF): It's fine now. Thank you. —Bruce1eetalk 06:24, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Struway2 (talk) 09:14, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Kosack (talk) 09:55, 9 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube link[edit]

Hi! Just flagging that the YouTube link on this page – "Learn how to properly generate Gale citation URLs for use on Wikipedia" – is broken. (Was hoping to learn how!) Mary Gaulke (talk) 01:00, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@MaryGaulke: Thanks for flagging, I'll see if there's an updated version of this video we might be able to get or create. Samwalton9 (WMF) (talk) 16:39, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The video link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYaGuw4Szxs) is still marked as private so unable to view. Should the link be removed from the page at this point? Thanks! Skynxnex (talk) 17:50, 16 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'll pin this comment here since its relevant. I would like to properly link Gale sources in articles but do not know how to. Kindly, any updates on this end for a web page, essay, or video? Adog (TalkCont) 05:04, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Samwalton9 (WMF) Was there any update on this? Nobody (talk) 06:14, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
