Any chance of moving this to 2nd Sunday of Aug ( 9th) ? -- Tinu Cherian - 07:39, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sending out note to others[edit]

I am mailing out the meeting note to a wider circle including people who are not (at least not yet) contributors. I am suggested they add their names in confirmation so that the organizers are sufficiently informed on the numbers turning up. Shyamal (talk) 05:47, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could you send the mailer to me to forward to more people of similar sorts?prashanthns (talk) 05:52, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Have sent a copy, also attaching body text below. Shyamal (talk) 06:40, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is a proposed meeting of those interested in Wikipedia in Bangalore on

Sunday, 16-Aug-2009 3:00 PM IST

At

The Centre for Internet and Society
No. D2, 3rd Floor, Sheriff Chambers
14, Cunningham Road, Bangalore,
Karnataka 560052, India
Phone: (+91)-080-4092-6283‎
Fax: (+91)-080-4114-8130

All are invited and the participation of academics, archivists, teachers, students, scholars and others interested in the role of free and high quality information would be particularly valuable.

You will already be aware that the quality of India related material is often poor. Since most Indians lack access to good libraries, they are incapable of following one of the most basic requirements of Wikipedia which is to be able to cite reliable sources. The level of information literacy that is required to be useful for quality content contribution is extremely limited.

Those associated with research and education can make a positive change to this landscape for the greater public good. Attention may also be drawn here to projects of various schools and universities

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Schools_and_universities_project

and even government research institutions such as the US NIH

http://www.nih.gov/news/health/jul2009/od-14.htm

This first meeting may help us identify reasons to contribute, ways to contribute and to help each other

Please feel free to forward this to others who might be interested. It would be a good idea to indicate your confirmation by editing the meetup page above and appending your name (even if this might be your first attempt to edit wikipedia ! ) to the list of attendees so that the organizers are informed of any logistic requirements.
