Applied for Wikimedia Foundation grant - seeking comment and support

Since March 2018 I have been Wikimedian in Residence (meta:Wikimedians in Residence Exchange Network) at the University of Virginia. Among other things I organize collaborations with the library. Some notes on my projects are at meta:University of Virginia and WP:UVA.

In the above proposal I am assisting some librarians, researchers, and our copyright lawyer in requesting US$15,000 from the Wikimedia Foundation in the November 2018 call for projects as described at meta:Grants:Project. With this money the library would, in summer 2019, develop a tool kit and event package for more libraries to celebrate Public Domain Day and to incorporate Wikimedia engagement into their program. We will be hosting a Public Domain Day event of our own with Wikimedia engagement in January 2019 to get experience before starting the grant funded project. I am posting here because I want to connect the concept and commemoration of the January 15 Wikipedia Day with the 1 January Public Domain Day. Wiki NYC already celebrates WP:Wikipedia Day enthusiastically.

I signed up here, but so far I cannot see how to signup on Eventbrite. Perhaps it is too soon?

I am thinking about a lightning talk, but I am unsure about the topic. Perhaps Jersey. No, no, not New Jersey, across the river, Jersey in the Duchy of Normandy.

The Paul is another hotel that's right nearby and a bit cheaper, though I've never stayed there. Beyond that, and you'd probably want to factor in the cost of transportation. Ace Hotel is pretty nice, though, so it may be worth it for the convenience of being there in the hotel. I'll ping some other NYC people in case they have tips.

@ArnoldReinhold: We will have a projector with a dedicated Chromebook. Slides aren’t required, but if you have them, we have a Google Drive folder where people can upload them. Not linked publicly for obvious reasons, but if you sign up someone will email it to you. Given it's a Chromebook, Google slides or live demos (in a browser) work best, but we can work with PowerPoint as well (Keynote probably will not work, though). Bike parking

If my wrist injury doesn't get worse I intend to ride Citi Bike. Or else my folding bike and store it inconspicuously behind the coat rack, which is unsecured but hasn't been reported to lose coats in past years. Video Fixes

I spotted one small glitch. #16 CUNY is longer than it should be.  Done Also, the afternoon keynote, at 220MB, busts wikimedia's filesize limit. Somehow it squeaked through, but now seems to be broken So that'll have to be fixed too.  Done Magically appears to be fixed. If you see anything else LMK. Adding an Edit-a-thon page

Monthly skillshare

Couple nights ago we had our monthly meeting. They've become bigger, but in my opinion they have a serious imbalance which has only gotten worse. That is, they are almost entirely about organizational matters. Things like how well we did last month, what we're doing next month, upcoming elections to the master Wikimedia Foundation, etc. Moderately boring to me (that's one reason why I'm not on the Board of Directors anymore) and not useful to the most important audience: newcomers. One newbie politely complained that the promised skill share didn't happen. He's right; it should happen. Others have either complained to me privately or told me of friends who attended one meeting, found it lacking in this regard, and did not return.

The monthly meeting is already too long for the comfort of some members. It is definitely as long as our current landlord will allow, so I do not propose to add an early or late extension. If the organization meeting is to be shortened, it shouldn't be for this reason. Instead, we should have a separate session. Possibly simultaneously in another, smaller room, but more likely a second monthly skill share directed mainly at newbies.

Far as I see, edit-athons are our main recruiting ground. Our host organizations publicize them by using a topical focus, which generally encourages people to attempt a new article, particularly a biography of the living. The least experienced thereby get the toughest job.

Those who found hope, pleasure and understanding from the experience can go to another session with a different topical focus, and sit through the same introductory lecture. That's pretty much a wasted, boring half hour, especially when they hear it a third time. We also tell them how to find all our events (also a less than perfect matter) but when they come to the monthly, they get nothing. Everyone is talking familiarly about matters they don't understand or have a reason to care about. The main thing they need is a chance to learn more of the technical and social aspects of editing. How to judge a good reference, how to weave articles together by links, how to dispute content without sparking explosions, things like that.

There wouldn't be the usual lecture with Five Pillars and Conflict of Interest and such, as long as the majority have already had it. If several have pretty nearly the same questions, then yes we do a long answer but not one requiring slides or other prep work. We could try publicizing a particular technical matter, such as article intros or pictures or Wikidata for some sessions or many, thus requiring a short lecture. Short, thus not taking much time from coaching and, well, sharing skills learned recently or long ago.

Not quite every month. March for example is always crammed; all hands on deck for edit-athons, and in the summer many of the experienced are out of town and others would rather do outdoor things. But, we should do something like this, several times a year and publicized (invited) at edit-athons. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:19, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

  • @Jim.henderson: I would be in favor of more thoughtful agenda planning that determined in advance how much time goes to administration versus discussing content editing. I was at the May meeting and the schedule was tight and included a presentation from the Interference Archive, who regularly host Wikipedia events. I thought that was new and different and enjoyed it.

This past meeting was much improved. Presentations were informative and, more important, half an hour remained for chitchat, much of it highly useful. @Whatamidoing (WMF): You are asking for a significant labor commitment when there is already years of Wikimedia Movement-wide labor scarcity to do orthodox event marketing. Typical Wikimedia affiliates have challenges posting their events in email, which is easiest, then choose meetup.com, twitter, facebook, and conventional channels next. Wikimedia Space seems like the option to consider after all those are in order first. Is there some reason to consider it further? Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:07, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
In the future, I think that it may be possible to take content from the Wikimedia Space and send it out semi-automagically to some other spaces (e.g., post it on wiki or to a Facebook page).

This has been a regular topic of discussion in many Wikimedia communities. When the technology is there, even to cross post to just one platform, then I anticipate adoption. hi. the NYC meetup meeting yesterday was very helpful and informative. I was wondering, is it possible to transmit all such meetings via ZOOM, like the one yesterday which was transmitted via ZOOM and via conference call?

It's certainly something we can talk about doing. I've been in some mixed attendance meetings before, and they're challenging once you get beyond a small number of people. With a group of 20, having 5 remotely connected would be hard to integrate into the meeting in any smooth way. That said, it would work to have people connect in order to present something (planned) or in order to watch the meetings, and we could have at least one person monitoring the Zoom chat to allow for that level of participation at minimum. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:59, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Bronx photos needed?

My project this summer is to ride every street in The Bronx (solo, masked, and otherwise corona-compliant). I'm about 10% done so far. I'll have have my camera with me, so if there's Bronx photos you want, please add them to Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in the Bronx and drop me a note on my talk page to make sure I see it. That category currently has mostly churches right now. Nothing wrong with that (and I'll grab them as they come along), but churches aren't really my thing. I should mention there are probably landmarks out there which need photos, like the Bertine Block Historic District or Bronx Grit Chamber (which I'll try to write later), as well as additional photos needed, like Crotona Park's lake. Epicgenius, Well, it took a while, but I finally got down there. commons:Category:Bertine Block Historic District, commons:Category:Bronx Grit Chamber. Unfortunately, the shooting environment wasn't great, so the shots are kind of mediocre. The Bertine Block was actually kind of depressing. These were obviously beautiful buildings at one time. I'm not sure if you know about this or if you're interested, but the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission has made a map of all city landmarks, and many Bronx landmarks have no images at all. BTW, this is what I've done so far. I take my camera with me on almost every trip, but I'm finding I'm doing more riding and less photography than I had originally envisioned. Swedish where?

I registered at Eventbrite for the New York location of the editathon but the E-mail confirmation says DC. tagging @FULBERT, @Bluerasberry, the items that I have posted here are one example of how I feel our community can use currently active groups which have already created a dynamic active community, such as the exemplary outstanding events, group calls, and projects put forth by NYC Meetup group, and then use that to create a new communication process, an active "pipeline" to facilitate greater interchange between WMF events and efforts, and the editing community, and how using existing platforms and groups can feed into a broader and more inclusive approach and communication process between WMF and the editing community. I welcome any comments.
I am considering the possibility of creating the first community WikiProject to exist at the Meta website, and to make it one which would have a counterpart here at English Wikipedia. It would be to enhance and broaden communication between the WMF and the editing communtiy, and within the editing community itself. I picture calling it "WikiProject Community Facilitation." It is only an idea right now, but every step forward helps me to slightly refine and work out this idea further somewhat. I welcome any comments. thanks!!

Right, there are no "wikiprojects" in meta, but there could be. There was not a decision or social planning about this, but how things happened was that instead of WikiProjects people either formed meta:Wikimedia movement affiliates or they set up projects like Wiki Loves X. There is meta:WikiProjects but not much is there.
As you are planning things, think in advance about how many participants you wish to recruit and what you want them to do. For context on the popularity of English Wikipedia WikiProjects, check Wikipedia:Database reports/WikiProject watchers. When you know the watcher count, then in general only 10% of them will contribute to programs in a given year. Look around to projects in meta and anticipate that there is no precedent for higher success in engagement in meta as compared to English Wikipedia. As an example of meta activity for a popular well developed community, the engagement for meta:Talk:Wikimedia Deutschland which consumes a budget of about $10 million / year.
I do want to see WikiProjects develop on meta and if you want to make a project there then I would support you. I encourage you to ration your time and document your expectations as you go along, because project organization on meta can consume 100s of hours with results that take years to mature. Meta is essential for documentation and development but it is not obvious to me where to invest time to support others usefully.

Question re chapter message groups

Hi. It was great to see everyone on the zoom call yesterday. I have a message for the chapter, and also a question. Would anyone be interested in joining the existing threads on Telegram for wikipedia topics. There are a number of Telegram groups for various topics on Wikipedia. They are highly active. Also would anyone like to join a thread on Telegram for the Nyc chapter? I think it might be highly useful. Let me know. Thanks! We already have a channel on Discord, but I'm not sure if anyone is actually using it or not. , and as per the comments below, those channels are actively used by various editors. Since we already have the Discord channel, I was wondering if maybe we could please set up another channel for the nyc group, which would utilize a simple messaging app like Telegram.     thanks for your reply, but personally I find the app Telegram to be more convenient to use. I appreciate your thoughts on this. my only point was that since Telegram is already used for varioous other active groups at Wikipedia, I felt it might be useful to have a Telegram group for the NYC meetup chapter as well, but obviously, only if other people wish to do so. there is no rush on this at all, of course.   • Though it was in a different context, I'd go back to what you and I said in yesterday's meeting: IMO too many discussions suffer because they become fragmented across too many platforms/sites/pages. We aren't a very large community, and spreading the smallish number of people who want to engage in a chat-like platform across multiple platforms would mean discussion threads get lost. It also means one platform would probably languish in relative inactivity. Most people don't know (in part because we didn't advertise it well), but we also had a Slack instance for a long time, too (now dead). It never really took off, and never saw anything close to the amount of activity our Discord has. If it turned out we have a lot of members using Telegram and more people want to use that than Discord, then of course we can explore switching, but I think Discord is going reasonably well. It doesn't fit with everyone's online lifestyle, to be sure, but we have several active channels, have run a few events there, there are maybe 7-10 frequent users, another 10 who pop in now and then, another 30 who regularly use discord but are primarily in other servers (but can be pinged on ours), and about 100 more who created an account or participated in a specific event. I would agree with you on that; if this is even considered at all, then it would only be based on which resource people would find convenient. you have a very valid point about the existing active channel on Discord.
    also, by the way, my only point is that since this Telegram group would a totally new effort anyway,. no one is likely to prefer it to Discord, unless they specifically find Telgram easier, and don't already participate so much on Discord. so that is basically my only reason for offering this suggestion in the first place.
