Re-purposing this badge[edit]

The thought and intention of this badge was good, but I personally think this badge is currently too narrow in scope and should be widened a little. This badge currently has a set number of user who qualify and is entirely non-obtainable to anyone outside of that scope. This makes it a stale badge in my opinion. My proposal to breath some life back into this and make it serve some reasonable purpose would be to move this badge to WP:Teahouse/Badge/Birthday and call it the Teahouse birthday badge and all of the active hosts and active registered guests could get one automatically dealt out by Jtmorgan's HostBot once a year on the birthday of the Teahouse. There would be a minor modification to indicate which birthday it is on the badge (like I did with the small badge -sandbox which is still sitting in limbo that allows putting numbers on the lower right corner) in the upper left corner of the image on the badge. What do you think? Technical 13 (talk) 15:53, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Technical 13, I see what you're getting at but I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. "This badge currently has a set number of user who qualify and is entirely non-obtainable to anyone outside of that scope." : was the express intent of this badge. It was meant as a one-time special honor for people who were part of making the Teahouse successful early on. Please feel free to suggest other badges we could create if you want. Birthdays should be special! And we can have a new one every year. :) heather walls (talk) 17:08, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I totally understand that aspect of it, and those people would still have that honor by having it noted in the badge on the cupcake (well in the corner off to the side a little as to not block too much) a big "1st year" or something of that source giving that recognition... For example, I started with the Teahouse in march of this year (less than a month after the Teahouse's birthday) so next Feb, I would get the birthday badge with a "2" or "2nd" in the corner where as yours would have the "1" or "1st" or however it was agreed to expand it out. So, first year people still get that distinction and it doesn't take that away, but it recycles the code a little to include others noting which year of the project they joined. I'll see if I can work up a couple examples sometime... Technical 13 (talk) 17:45, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I like the spirit of your idea, Technical 13! But I don't think we should expand the old badges for new uses - as Heather says they were designed for a specific purpose and it may confuse things to change them after the fact (the badge research I've read points to consistency and specificity as being really important for badges, and while we're still measuring the effects of the original badges, repurposing them can muddy the waters in unexpected ways that I'd rather not have to figure out). If you'd like to make a new badge for people's own 1 year (2 year, etc) Teahouse anniversaries, that sounds really awesome though! Siko (talk) 18:51, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
