Unwanted side effects of template merge[edit]

The merger approved in WP:Templates for discussion/Log/2020 February 4#Various TV-related WikiProject templates had some unwanted side effects that are now being discussed at WT:WikiProject Television#Changes to project templates messed up categorization.

I'm putting this here to remind TfD participants and closing admins that categorization side-effects are a common risk of template merging. Closing admins should ask themselves "if templates will change, will categories change in a non-obvious way?" and if so, "does the discussion show that this has been considered?" and "do I, as the closing admin, need to do anything to make sure categories are maintained or category members are moved to the obvious successor categories" and "are all changes to categories and their memberships either obvious or a reflection of the discussion?"

If the categories will change in non-obvious ways but it has not been discussed, or there is no consensus on how to handle category changes, consider re-listing the discussion to give time for the categorization issue to be discussed and a consensus formed. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 19:29, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
